I am a practicing Christian, a disciple of Jesus, a husband of over 50 years, a father and a grandfather, a business man, a veteran and a friend to all who will have me.
I have served or am serving, at various times, as an Evangelist, a Pulpit fill pastor, an Associate Pastor of Evangelism and as Senior Pastor of a church plant. My passion is for practicing and teaching the Bible, building small groups, reaching the lost with the message of the Gospel of Jesus, recovering the straying Sheep of God and the gathering together the Called of God, in neighborhoods, business settings and in churches by equipping other Christians.
I have authored a few small books and I have a background in professional business management, finance and investments.
I am glad to meet you, even if it is virtually. Write me at any time and let's become friends.
WE SHOULD KNOW THIS. IT WILL SAVE OUR LIFE AND OUR SOUL
Really. We can actually DO this for our benefit – and for God’s glory!
Psalms 103:1-4, (A Psalm of David).
Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits;
Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with loving kindness and compassion;
So, what exactly is THE PIT, God rescues us from?
The Bible defines “THE PIT” as
corruption,
destruction,
a ditch and
a grave.
It is also referred to as a “pit of hell”.
This definition is from the Hebrew language and comes from a root word or meaning
“to sink down,
be bowed down,
be humbled;
depression of the mind.
(taken from Psalms 103:4)
What is the PIT we can fall into which become our corruption, our destruction, a ditch a grave and a “pit of hell”? What are these PITS which cause us to sink down, to be bowed down, humbled and depressed in our mind? Here are a few:
The PIT of fear.
The PIT of anger.
The PIT of poverty.
The PIT of hatred.
The PIT of anxiety.
The PIT of lack and want.
The PIT of revenge.
The PIT of selfishness.
The PIT of resentment.
The PIT of addiction.
The PIT of lust and perversion.
The PIT of self-pity.
The PIT of envy.
The PIT of pride.
The PIT of self.
These and many more can become (or have become) a snare to our soul and mind. They can dictate our every thought and act and lead us into daily captivity of depression, destruction. A living hell. An above ground grave.
ESCAPE THE PIT!
Avoiding the PIT takes discipline and work on our part. We must consciously tell our soul to Bless the LORD. The Bible tells us to “Bless the LORD, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits”
If we follow this command – in other words, actually DO this – God redeems your life from the pit, and will crown you with loving kindness and compassion
Do it now. You will see, if you DO IT NOW. SAY THESE THINGS, NOW
“I Bless you LORD with my soul,
“I Bless you LORD with my mind, will and emotions.
“My soul says ” I Bless you LORD for you have rescued me, and You give me Your peace.
“You give me Your Joy.
“Today, I am full of Your Peace and Your Joy.
“Today, I am redeemed.
“Today, You have given me a strong and sound mind. I Bless you LORD for You are my redemption.”
I am FREE of fear.
I am FREE of anger.
I am FREE of poverty.
I am FREE of hatred.
I am FREE of anxiety.
I am FREE of lack and want.
I am FREE of revenge.
I am FREE of selfishness.
I am FREE of resentment.
I am FREE of addiction.
I am FREE of lust and perversion.
I am FREE of self-pity.
I am FREE of envy.
I am crowned with the courage of God.
I am crowned with the peace of Jesus.
I am crowned with all of God’s provisions of plenty.
I am crowned with God’s Love.
I am crowned with the confidence with comes from knowing God.
I am crowned with all the riches of Christ Jesus.
I am crowned with God’s reconciliation.
I am crowned with freedom in from the flesh.
I am crowned with God’s contentment.
I am crowned with a pure heart and a clean mind.
I am crowned with God’s satisfaction in my soul.
I am crowned with the gift of giving.
Bless the LORD, Oh my soul, and all that is within me. Bless His Holy Name!
I am borrowing an excerpt from Pastor Trent Casto’s sermon from February 25, 2024, taken from Ephesians 2:11-22, (Covenant Church of Naples, PCA, Naples, Florida), and I am focusing on the matter of ‘hope’. Pastor Casto asks,
“What is the hope that sustains you in life? You may be sustained by a short-term hope such as getting through school, or beyond a challenging phase of parenting, or through a particular medical treatment. But what if you don’t get through? What hope do you have? It may be hope for your children, that they will grow and be happy and successful however you define it. That’s a wonderful desire, but if it doesn’t happen, what hope do you have left?
“The hope that carries you may be for a better tomorrow, a peaceful retirement, a financial windfall. But what if tomorrow never comes?
“The Christian hope runs deeper than all these things and can sustain us even if these other hopes do not come to fruition.
“The Christian hope is not simply a wish for the future but a certainty that God will do what He has promised. (It is hard to overstate the significance of having such a hope.
“If you are without hope today, or you realize that your hope is on shaky ground, there is a hope which can serveas a firm foundation that will not give way no matter what else in life does give way.” (End of sermon excerpt).
Let me continue by explaining that this word, ‘hope’ is not a wistful longing of uncertain outcome. This ‘hope’ as it used in Ephesians 2:12, comes from the Greek word ‘elpís’, meaning, to anticipate and to welcome – correctly used, it speaks of a confident expectation of what is sure to occur; a certainty. If you are without this kind of hope, sadly, you are walking in the blind, and it need not be that way.
Faith – Certainty – Hope – Proof.
(#1). Hebrews 11:1 prophetically proclaims that “Now faith is thecertainty of thingshoped for, a proof of things not seen.” (NASB). Faith – Certainty – Hope – Proof.
Another way to say this is, “Now faith is the assurance – the title deed, the confirmation – of things hoped for – divinely guaranteed, and the evidence of things not seen – but is the conviction of their reality—it is faith that comprehends, as fact, what cannot be experienced by the physical senses. (Amplified Bible Version).
In simpler words, you have to be dogged in and stubborn about your faith. You must be firmly planted on the conviction that God will finish what He has begun in you. You must be firm in your mind that God hears and answers your prayers. Furthermore, you must know that He will answer all your prayers in ways that conform to His great gift of salvation to you, and which will benefit you maturing into the image and likeness of Christ.
You must know that to be saved, literally means to be made safe, to heal, to preserve, to do well, to be made whole; rescued from destructionand brought into divine safety, rescuing believers from the penalty and power of sin. (‘Saved’ in the Greek is the word sozo, pronounced sode-zo).
This is a certainty. It will come to pass; It has come to pass; receive it.
Proximity Is Everything.
(#2). Ephesians 2:13 prophetically proclaims, “But no win Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near, by the blood of Christ.”
Romans 10:6-10, explains it this way, “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL GO UP INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), 7or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
It is – that is the Word of Faith – is as near to you as the words in your mouth!
Believe it. Speak it. Embrace it. This is a certainty.
This is a certainty. It will come to pass; It has come to pass; receive it.
AND WE KNOW.
(#3). “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son.” (see Romans 8:28-29).
And we know, or at the very least we should know (and understand), these Four Grand Principal Truths:
God causes all things to work together for good,
to those who love God,
to those who are called according to His
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son.
Let’s re-review this carefully.
It is God – alone – who is the cause.
This is exclusively for those who love God.
This is exclusively for those who are (the) called according to His purpose.
It is God alone who predestined those whom he foreknew to be conformed to the image of His Son. (This is God’s Primary Purpose and Plan. For by this single offering – the sacrifice of His only Son – He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.)
This is a certainty. It will come to pass; It has come to pass; receive it.
Keeping All This In Mind.
(#4). Scriptures tell us, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8).
“And Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will happen.” (Matthew 21:21).
“If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15:7).
OUR PART is to ask, seek, knock, have faith, doubt not, and it will be done.
OUR PART is to have faith and accept what comes from the Hand of God and put it to good use.
GOD’S PART is to create, give, bestow, love us unconditionally, cause all things to work together for our good, whether we understand it, at first, or not.
I wonder. What would happen if the Apostles, Peter, Andrew, James (son of Zebedee), John (James’ brother), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Jude, and Simon (the Zealot) were somehow able to visit our world and go into our current-day churches?
I wonder what they would think, say and do?
Think about it.
I wonderwhat would happen if we took the Words of Jesus, that is, His teachings, His admonitions, His warnings, His deeds and works, and His miracles seriously enough to actually believe sufficiently to actually DO what He has told us to DO – and to keep doing those things?
Think about it.
I also wonder what would happen to this world if we believed and acted as the Apostles did?
It has been over two thousand years since Jesus and The Apostles walked the earth, and there is no doubt about the impact they had on this world. And even with our greatest concerns and sacrificial efforts to preserve that Message and practice, the Gospel we teach, live and practice today seems to pale into a ghostly reminder in comparison to the Gospel taught, lived and demonstrated by Jesus, the Apostles and the early Christians. Please, just read your Bible and see it.
I have tried, at various times and in various periods of my life, without making a big fuss, to do and practice the teachings of Jesus. I admit it did this partially out of obedience to His Word and partially out of curiosity. I want to be obedient to Him, but I also wanted to see if these things (witnessing Jesus and the Gospel, disciple making, miracles, etc.) could still occur – and not just occur, but occur like it did with the Apostles and with the early church.
Here is some of what I think I have discovered after thirty some years of trying.
Witnessing to people about Jesus and the Gospel can be nerve wracking and confusing at first. But with practice and given time, it becomes easier and you can grow bolder.
Most Christians nowadays, including Pastors, theologians, elders and deacons in the church, don’t witness. Most won’t even try.
I know that a few people got saved after I told them about Jesus and about the Gospel Message – at least I knew of a few. So, I know it can happen, even for the least of us.
I still wonder why so many decide to follow Jesus’ when His Words to potential believers are so blunt. He leaves no doubt about the responsibilities, the cost, and the contract one will be making with God if they decide to become a Christian and follow Him.
He is equally clear about the consequence for entering into a contract with God, that is, making a commitment of discipleship, then turning back or falling away.
But, now I know. I know what God has in store for those of us who have been faithful and obedient. Click on the banner “NOW I KNOW” and you can know, too:
So, now I have almost stopped wondering – except to say, I wonder why I waited so long to become His child – an heir of the Kingdom of Heaven and Joint-heirs with Jesus.
And, if you don’t know Him and haven’t received His monumental gift of unconditional love, salvation for your soul, forgiveness of all your sins, a new start to live – one full of hope, meaning and purpose – I WONDER what you are waiting for? Call on Him now. Give yourself to Him and live!
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
In this beloved verse, God reassures His people that He has plans for their welfare, prosperity, and a hopeful future. It reminds us that God’s intentions toward us are good, and He has specific purposes and blessings in store.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
This verse reminds us that God is actively working for the good of those who love Him and are aligned with His purpose. Even in challenging circumstances, God can turn things around and bring about His perfect plan for our lives.
“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
When we delight in the Lord and seek Him wholeheartedly, He aligns the desires of our hearts with His own will. As we prioritize our relationship with Him, He graciously grants us the desires that are in line with His purpose.
“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’”
God’s ways and thoughts are infinitely higher and wiser than ours. This verse reminds us that sometimes we may not fully understand God’s plans in the present moment, but we can trust that His ways surpass our limited understanding and He works everything for our ultimate good.
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
When we put our trust in God, He promises to meet all our needs abundantly, drawing from His limitless resources and the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
This verse encourages us to place our complete trust in God and acknowledge His lordship over our lives. By surrendering our own understanding and seeking His guidance, He will direct our paths and make them straight, leading us to His perfect will.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
When we prioritize seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness above all else, He takes care of our needs. He is a faithful provider, and as we align ourselves with His purposes, He grants us the blessings and provisions we require.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
This verse highlights that we are God’s masterpiece, created with a unique purpose in Christ Jesus. He has prepared good works in advance for us to accomplish, and when we walk in alignment with His plan, we experience fulfillment and impact in fulfilling His purposes.
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
In our weakness, God’s strength is made perfect. This verse reminds us that God’s grace is more than enough to sustain us and empower us to overcome challenges. We can trust that He equips us with the necessary strength to fulfill His purpose in our lives.
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.”
This verse assures us that God is our protector and provider. As we walk blamelessly before Him, He withholds no good thing from us, showering us with His favor, honor, and blessings.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
God is a God of new beginnings. This verse encourages us to remain attentive to His work in our lives. Even in the most challenging situations, He can create a way where there seems to be no way, bringing forth new life and refreshing streams of His provision.
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
In this verse, the psalmist expresses confidence in God’s faithfulness to fulfill His purpose for his life. It reminds us of God’s unending love and reassures us that He will bring to completion the work He has started in us.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
To experience the fullness of God’s plan, we are called to break away from worldly influences and allow our minds to be renewed according to God’s truth. As our thinking aligns with His will, we gain discernment and clarity to recognize and embrace His good, pleasing, and perfect will for our lives.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
God desires to guide and teach us in the paths we should take. This verse assures us of His personal and loving guidance, providing wisdom and counsel as we seek His will and direction.
“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
We may make plans, but ultimately, God determines our steps. This verse reminds us to submit our plans and desires to God’s sovereignty, trusting that He will guide and establish our paths according to His perfect purposes.
“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him.”
When we find our delight in the Lord, He establishes and upholds our steps. This verse reassures us that as we seek intimacy with God, He actively leads and supports us along the path of His choosing.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
God invites us to call upon Him, and He promises to respond. When we seek Him in prayer and inquire of Him, He reveals hidden treasures and profound insights that surpass our understanding.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
In this passage, Jesus encourages us to persistently seek God and ask Him for what we need. He assures us that those who earnestly seek, ask, and knock will receive answers, find what they are seeking, and have doors of opportunity opened for them.
“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.”
God’s blessing is the source of true wealth and abundance. This verse reminds us that as we align with God’s ways and walk in obedience to Him, He blesses us with prosperity that does not require excessive toil or hardship.
“The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.”
When we honor God and walk in His ways, He opens the floodgates of heaven and pours out abundant blessings upon us. This verse speaks of divine favor, productivity, and sufficiency in all our endeavors.
“How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.”
God has an abundance of good things stored up for those who reverence Him and find their shelter in Him. This verse assures us that God delights in blessing His people openly and lavishly.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
As we place our hope and trust in the Lord, He renews our strength. This verse describes the supernatural empowerment and endurance God grants to those who rely on Him, enabling them to soar, run, and walk without growing weary or faint.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
Jesus urges us not to worry but to trust in God’s provision. This passage emphasizes that if God takes care of His creation, such as the birds of the air, He will undoubtedly provide for our needs as well. Our value to God far surpasses that of the birds, reinforcing the assurance of His faithful care.
“However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ — the things God has prepared for those who love him.”
God has prepared unimaginable and glorious things for those who love Him. This verse reminds us that the blessings and rewards awaiting us in God’s eternal kingdom far exceed anything we can comprehend or envision in our present earthly lives.
As our Shepherd, the Lord provides and cares for our every need. This well-known verse highlights the sufficiency and completeness we find in Him, assuring us that we lack nothing when we place our trust in His faithful guidance and provision.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
This comforting verse reminds us that God is present with us in every situation. We need not fear or be discouraged because He is our God. He promises to strengthen, help, and support us with His righteous hand. His unwavering presence and assistance assure us that what God has for us is indeed for us.
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
God’s care for us is deeply personal and compassionate. This verse encourages us to cast all our worries, anxieties, and burdens upon Him, knowing that He genuinely cares for us. It affirms that God is attentive to our needs and desires to bear the weight of our concerns.
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Jesus instructs us not to worry about basic necessities but to prioritize seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness. When we place God first in our lives, He graciously provides for our material needs. This verse emphasizes the importance of aligning our priorities with God’s purposes and trusting His faithful provision.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
God is our constant refuge and source of strength. This verse reminds us that He is ever-present and ready to assist us in times of trouble, offering solace, protection, and the inner fortitude we need to face any challenge.
A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS – Ask, Seek, Knock – Part 28
Creative, Causative, Prophetic, Instructional
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (The Words of Jesus, Matthew 7:7-11)
It would seem, at this point, that Jesus is abruptly changing the subject to persistent, confident supplication, and in the broadest sense. Is there a continuity, a connection between what came before to what is being presented?
He has been teaching by various examples on how we must clear all the ‘interference’, that is, the sin, from our spirit, our soul, our mind and our body, so we can focus our hearts and our minds on Him and the spiritual.
Jesus started with the basics of becoming ‘perfected’, teaching us to have a clear mental slate, so He can write His words upon our hearts and minds. This must happen before we can expect to receive from Him and to begin thetransformation from needing ‘the milk of the word, to eating solid food’, from being the rebellious child to the mature disciple of Christ.
We have been told to lay up treasures in heaven, for where our treasure is, there our heart will be also, and it is from the heart that spring the issues of life. In other words, change our focus and our mindset from earthly and temporal to those things above, to the Kingdom of Heaven and of eternal things.
Next, Jesus has told us to guard what we set our sights on and to guard what comes into the focus of our eyes, as they are the ‘lamp to our bodies’.
Jesus has taught us about being single-minded. He is saying to clear away the clutter of double-mindedness. The Apostle James warns that the double minded person is unstable in all his or her ways and should not expect they will receive anything from the Lord. (James 1:5-8).
Jesus taught us that we are to focus on things of an eternal nature instead of the temporal; “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness” and do not be distracted with worries about necessities of the world because God will provide.
Jesus has warned – yes, warned us – once again about our focus. This time He is admonishing the believer not to be the judge or a judge, for only God is able to judge.
Finally, He has taught us about spiritual discernment and the dangers of unrepentant, unrighteous people.
It would seem, at this point, that He is abruptly changing the subject to persistent, confident supplication and in the broadest sense. There is a continuity, a connection in what came before to what is now being presented.
Assuming you have accomplished ‘the basics’, Jesus is now telling you to “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”This statement can be as perplexing as it is profound. Once your mind is set on the things of God, on the things above, your priorities are right and “everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
Assuming you have followed Jesus closely; watching, listening, learning, looking over His shoulder as He “went throughout, teaching in churches and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people,as they brought Him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and watched as He healed them”. (Matthew 4:23-25)
He has told you to make Him and His Kingdom work a priority over your family, your job and everything you hold as important and to “Follow Him, and He will make you fishers of men”. Now that time has come.
Jesus encourages you to ASK, as He reminds us, “which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?”
Perhaps your denomination teaches that these kinds of things have ceased. Perhaps you believe that Jesus did these things, but you cannot. Or, perhaps you believe the kinds of works are possible, but you have not seen them in your life, yet.
Recount the steps you have taken with Jesus. Have you completed the ‘basics’ He has taught in preparation for this work, or did you just ‘say a little prayer to accept Jesus’ and go on about your way?
It is time to step out on faith. A faith that is built on the saving and sanctifying work that comes from following Jesus and by “the renewing of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2).
Your Brother and Friend,
Mike Young
PS: This is not hyperbole, nor is it bending the Word of God to fit a topic. This is the Gospel Truth. Hear it, meditate on it, do it, and nothing will ever be the same again!
As a result, as a nation we are radically redrawing moral boundaries. For example, those surveyed were more likely to say it is morally unacceptable to renege on repaying a small debt to a relative than to have an abortion.
Less than half said it was morally unacceptable to tell a lie to protect their personal interest or reputation, with 27% saying it was morally acceptable or that it was not a moral issue at all.
Lying, stealing, killing, murdering, sexual perversion, alcoholism, drug addiction, and increasing violence of all kinds have been on the rise for decades.
When a society loses its ability to trust its institutions, its authority figures, its government, then it will cease to function which can lead to the kinds of societal chaos and anarchy we are now witnessing.
When members of society cannot trust or depend on one another it will descend into widespread violent discord, and eventually, it will cease to exist.
There are those who claim that statistics show that things are no worse today than they have ever been in America. But statistics can be subject to several variables. In this case, there are three standards of judgment.
(#1). Some are based on situational ethical standards, which are subject to the interpretation of the individual based on their personal view of the situation or circumstances at hand. This standard is highly subjective and is never static.
EXAMPLE: It is okay to steal food if you are hungry and cannot afford to pay for it. (If you were the victim of such a theft, how would you then feel?).
EXAMPLE: It is okay to lie if you don’t think it will hurt anyone, or if you think it will protect someone from a hurtful truth. (How would you feel, however, if you were the one being lied to?).
#2).Next are conditional ethics which are highly subjective to the desires, needs, wants and opinion of the those making the judgment. This standard is unreliable and subject to manipulation. It says “I will give you my approval if you give me what I want”.
EXAMPLE: It is okay to gossip and hurt the reputation of someone if they will not support you in a project or in your efforts; or to promote them above others who are less qualified, because they support you – even if your behavior, project or effort is questionable. A tit-for-tat ethos. (How would you feel if you were the victim of the gossip?).
(#3). Finally, a moral absolute – an absolute standard of truth. Coincidentally, the moral values and standards underpinning the foundations of the American Experiment, which sprang from a Judeo-Christian ethos, postulates a moral absolute – an absolute standard of truth. (This absolutism is stated in the second paragraph of our Declaration of Independence, “We hold these Truths to be self-evident…”).
EXAMPLE: You do the honest and the right thing simply because it is the right thing, regardless of how it benefits you – because the Bible says it is the only way. (How would you feel if someone treated you fairly at their own cost or peril?).
Now I ask, using one of the standards which are listed above, where do you stand? Please review the list below, of the TEN COMMANDMENTS which are taken from the Bible, and decide which of the three standards of ethics most closely defines your view of good morals and acceptable ethical standards. Put a check mark by your choice. Additionally, regardless of what you chose as your standard of ethics, choose a word from the two sets of what I will call motivations, from the ones in red text or the ones in blue text. Find the motivating word or the word that most closely describes how you feel about the 10 Commandments:
“You shall have no other gods before me.” God desires our complete loyalty and allegiance for our own benefit, not to forget His divine providence. This command forbids placing anyone or anything above God. (New Testament References: 1 Corinthians 8:6; 1 Timothy 2:5).
Situational – ‘It depends on the circumstances’
Conditional – ‘It depends on what I get in return’

For example, “I shall have no other gods (other than the Christian God)”. This implies you must believe in God. Choose a word from either list that best describes how that statement make you feel.
(These lists are from the New Testament, Galatians chapter 5)
sexual immorality, impurity,
sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control),
idolatry, sorcery,
hostility, strife,
jealousy, fits of anger,
disputes, dissensions,
factions [that promote heresies], envy,
drunkenness, riotous behavior,
OR
love – unselfish concern for others, joy,
inner peace, patience
kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control.
Two main points here are:
Point number 1.
(#1). If you lean toward ‘situational ethics’ you tend to be your own judge and jury and the judge and jury of others depending on how you view circumstances and situations.
(#2). If you lean toward ‘conditional ethics’ you tend to be self-centered. This one is hard to admit, but you know if you are. Your decisions and judgements based almost solely on how circumstances and situations affect you first and foremost, and what will benefit you most. I.e., what you will gain or get in return.
(#3). If you lean toward an ‘absolute standard of morals’ you can tend to be a rule keeper and you could be hard on yourself and harsh toward others at times, if you do not balance justice with mercy.
Point number 2.
Knowing the motivations for your ethical standard can help you better understand others response toward you. For example, if you are constantly in personal conflicts it may be because you think others are ‘out to get you’ or that you deserve better than others, so your decisions and ethical standards are geared to that motivation.
If you want a better life for yourself and for others your motivation may be to apply kindness, self-control, patience and a modicum of love when making judgments of circumstances, situations and of others.
You might make better decisions if you know your motivations.
A FINAL WORD – A NOTE TO (SELF) and to CHRISTIANS.
It can be easier to follow and keep the letter of the law, i.e., the rules. It can much more difficult to follow and keep the spirit of the law, i.e., make your ethical decisions from a motivation of love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness and self-control. Justice balanced by mercy. This is our calling and our responsibility.
A FINAL WORD – PERIOD.
Regarding the red text, the Bible says that if you use these standards, and other things like these. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
The Bible says that the fruit of the Spirit is the result of God’s presence within us. “Walk habitually in the Holy Spirit, seek God and be responsive to His guidance, and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts.”
“For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposedto the Spirit, and the desire of the Spiritopposesthe sinful nature”.

Mike Young
PS: I will leave you with this video. I do this cautiously because it has political overtones and is strictly secular in its approach to morals and ethics. It is a TED talk on The moral roots of liberals and conservatives by Jonathan Haidt. But it makes some good points – although, beware of any form of seductive Hegalianism.

Wars and rumors of war have been waged since the beginning of time. Whether between brothers, families, clans, tribes or nations, there has never been a true time of peace on earth.
Rather than recounting all the wars in the history of the world, let’s consider the most recent physical manifestations of this long-running war and see what we can determine.
Ukraine and Russia.
The United States has provided over $75 billion in aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia. We are in great part, funding this war instead of fighting it directly.
Israel.
The U.S. has provided Israel with over $300 billion in aid since 1971, and U.S. has provisionally agreed to provide around $4 billion per year through 2028. Recently, the Biden administration has requested an additional $14 billion in emergency funding as Israel wars with Hamas terrorists. Although we are not directly engaging Hamas, Hezbollah or other terror groups in the region, we are helping by funding the war against them.
Iran.
The United States is spending billions of dollars responding militarily to attacks by Iranian military proxies, such as the Houthis, Hamas, Harakat al-Nujaba, Hezbollah and others. We also respond militarily on occasion.
China.
The United States has been in a trade war and a war of economic and geopolitical strategies with China. But recently, rhetoric between the two nations is sounding like saber-rattling. There is a deep concern that an actual war with China could be on the horizon.
Fear of a new full-blown global war is real. The reasons for this fear are complex. A multitude of opinions and facts quickly overwhelm the average reader. But all lead to the same conclusion: Any misstep could bring us dangerously close to a full scale war. A war that would be unimaginably costly and just as deadly.
Russia is wary of the growth and encroachment of NATO on her borders. President Vladimir Putin has said as recently as October 2023 that suggestions the United States should prepare for a war against Russia and China were nonsense. Then warns the West that any war against Russia would be on a whole different level to the conflict in Ukraine, suggesting that nuclear arms are ‘on the table’ in such a turn of events.
We are waging a war for our sovereignty. It is common knowledge that our borders are not secure and it is estimated that over 11 million people now reside in the U.S., who entered illegally.
There are justified fears that there are those who have entered the United States illegally are here to commit illegal activities or who plan to harm the United States acting as foreign spies or through terrorist activities.
Aren’t we already fighting a war and just won’t acknowledge it? We read and hear about the wars being fought around the world, every day. These are physical wars, taking scores of lives daily. They are devastating communities and destroying states and nations.
But what’s new with all of this? Haven’t things like this been going on for decades, even centuries? The difference is that there is now a concurrence and a convergence of events that give additional meaning and urgency to what we are seeing.
Whether as a proxy or in direct confrontation, it would seem that the United States is already engaged in a physical global conflict, an undeclared state of war.
I would like to point out that there is also a spiritual war being waged in and unseen realm. A realm which is in the hearts and minds of men and women and is projected from these hearts and minds into the physical realm of our world.
This spiritual war is not just between nations and armies. It is being fought in our everyday lives. It is a war between good and evil, between God and His adversaries.
The end of this war was determined from its outset; but it must be fought to its conclusion. Your life in this present time, as well as your life eternally, are at stake.
Simply put, the dramatic rise of Globalism is a main concern. A Marxist-style of Globalism is being promulgated and propagated by entities such as the United Nations (through their Agenda 2030), U.N.E.S.C.O, and the World Economic Forum. There is, however, a new twist on this approach to Globalism, which I shall dub as “The New Global Cabal” (T.N.G.C.).
“The New Global Cabal” (T.G.N.C.) has renewed its efforts at world conquest by diminishing or eliminating the influence of global superpowers in order to merge all nations into a global community to be organized under a global commission to police and manage a one world government.
What is new is that this new Global Cabal is replacing threats of warfare as a means of conquest, with something called Sustainable Development. This could be looked upon as a modern day Trojan Horse. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, promises to provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
The second greatest problem facing this Globalist movement is the seemingly impossible task of getting the major world religions to cooperate in the formation of a one-world community with a one-world governance. This Global movement has formulated a genius method, however, to get the cooperation needed, and the crowning achievement is the establishment of the Abrahamic Family House. This is being introduced as a “Human Fraternity”. Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, and His Eminence Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, issued and signed the Document on “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together”, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is jointly bestowed on His Holiness Pope Francis and His Eminence Ahmed Al-Tayeb. Three religions, Catholicism (2 billion), Islam, (1.9 billion), and Judaism, (15.2 million), are represented. What is glaringly absent is (non-Catholic) Christianity, (1.3 billion). (See “The One World Church” for more detail).
Finally, there is a concurrent fulfillment of multiple Biblical prophecies converging and coinciding with ongoing and developing world events.
The first is an apparent reappearance of the prophetic harbinger known asThe Tower of Babel.
Secondly, is the ongoing fulfillment of the words of Jesus, delivered on the Mount of Olives (around A.D. 30). His disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen? What will be the sign of Your (second) coming, and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you.” Jesus then went into summary detail of the convergence of end time events which lead to a One World Government, the steps to a One World Religion and the End of the Age. (See “Is This The End?”)
There has been centuries of talk about a tribulation, the coming Great and Terrible Day of the Lord, the End of the Age, the second advent of Christ, a rapture of Christians from the earth and The Wrath of the Lamb.
We are told by Jesus and some of the Apostles that the End of Days, also known as the “birth pains” had begun as early as AD 1, but more likely between AD 30 and AD 100. For example:
Jesus called this period the LAST DAYS or the END OF THE AGE inMatthew 24:3-8.
The Apostle Paul called this period the LAST DAYS in Hebrews 9:26.
The Apostle Peter called this period the LAST DAYS in Acts 2:14-17.
The Apostle Paul called this period THESE LAST DAYS in Hebrews 1:1-2.
The Apostle Timothy called this period the LAST DAYS in 2 Timothy 3:1.
The Apostle Peter called this period the LAST DAYS in 1 Peter 1:20.
The Apostle Peter called this period the LAST DAYS in 1 Peter 4:7.
The Apostle Peter called this period the LAST DAYS in 2 Peter 3:3.
The Apostle John called this period the LAST DAYS in 1 John 2:18
It is very likely that the beginning of Sorrows, also known as the birth pangs as described in tribulation Seals ONE through FIVE which have been broken, progressively, up until this day.
There have been many times and events that have led Christians to believe that the day had arrived, only to discover that the time had not yet arrived. I believe many are growing skeptical when comparing current world events to prophecies. They are perhaps taking the stance that ‘it will happen when it happens’, and are becoming inattentive or doubtful, swallowed up in their own worldly affairs. But Scriptures tell us we will not know the day or the hour, but we can know ‘the season’ by the prophecies fulfilled and the events taking place.
Scriptures say that in comparison to “those days, before the (great global) flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so it will be with the coming of the Son of Man. At that time there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.” (See Matthew 24:38-41). Now is the time to be on watch and to be on the alert.
There has never been such a concurrence and convergence of both prophetic and world events as are now occurring. The Bible warns us to remain vigilant and ready and it gives examples and warnings of what will happen to those people who are not ready. (See Matthew 24:42 – 25:30).
All of this to say, that despite the chaos of political upheaval, the likelihood of wars, climatological fearmongering, famines, and earthquakes, Jesus tells us, “do not let your heart be troubled, believe in God, believe also in Me.” Our hope and peace is found in Him.
Let’s be about the work of the Kingdom as we stay ready for His triumphant return and pray to hear Him say, “well done, good and faithful servant”.
A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS – Pearls Before Pigs – Part 27
Creative, Causative, Prophetic, Instructional
“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, because they will trample them underfoot and turn to attack you and tear you to pieces.” – The Words of Jesus, Matthew 7:6
Holy refers to that which is sacred, physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated – most holy one or thing; A follower of Christ, The Word or deeds of God.
The “pearl” as mentioned here, comes from a proverb, meaning to thrust the most sacred and precious teachings of the gospel upon the most wicked and abandoned men, incompetent as they are, through their hostility to the gospel, to receive them, and thus to profane them.
A dog, universally despised in the East, comes from the Greek word ‘kyon‘ literally, a scavenging canine; figuratively, a spiritual predator who feeds off others. A loose dog was disdained in ancient times – viewed as a “mooch pooch” that ran about as a scavenger.
The swine was forbidden as food by the Levitical law, ( Leviticus 11:7 ; 14:8 ) the abhorrence which the Jews as a nation had of it may be inferred from (Isaiah 65:4). Swine were considered ceremonially unclean and naturally filthy animals.
They were also associated with demons (Mark 5:11-13), and another time swine and dogs are mentioned together (2 Pet. 2:22), they are associated with “false prophets”, who, like Balaam, knew the way of God but had “forsaken the right way”, men who had “known the way of righteousness”, but chose to “turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them”, showing they were Hebrews who were never saved (1 John 2:19).
This might raise questions. Why would Jesus, on the one hand, tell His disciples to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you” and, on the other hand, “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs”?
Is this a contradiction or a controversy, or is there a distinction? The answer to these questions must be found by considering ‘the dogs’ and ‘the swine’ as representing, not men and women as such, but the passions of this kind or that which make them brutish. So long as they identify themselves with those passions, we must deal cautiously and wisely with them, as one would with an aggressive dog or a swine.
The dogs and swine of these verses represent those people who are hardened and altogether incapable of receiving evangelic truth, and to whom that which is holy is utterly foreign and distasteful. The capacity to discern, distinguish, or to discriminate the source of a spiritual manifestation — whether it emanates from a good or evil spirit (i.e., a ‘dog’ or a ‘swine’), is the gift and ability of discerning of spirits which is bestowed by the Holy Spirit to Christian believer.
One certain way to discern a spirit is that “Anyone who confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God”. (1 John 4:15). Conversely, they do not know Him and are not from Him.
EXAMPLE: I became friendly with a man and his wife from our neighborhood. He was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Having known them for several months, I asked him if he believed in God. He said He did. I then asked if I could pray for him. He assented. After praying, I told Him about having a saving relationship with Jesus. This man began to frown and became enraged. I asked him what I had said that made him so angry, and he told me to get away from him and stay away. (His wife, later, apologized, saying she had no idea why he was acting that way.)
EXAMPLE: I once counseled a man who claimed to be a Christian, who had been charged with acts of sexual deviancy. At one point in our discussions, he told me that God understood his weakness toward sexual matters, had forgiven him, and that he could now continue to behave in that manner with impunity from God.
I felt a degree of compassion toward this man, knowing that this behavior would make his life a living hell and would destroy his chances in life. So, I told this man that his attitude and behavior demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of salvation and a severe addiction that required extensive therapy, and that he most likely was not a Christian and was in rebellion toward God and His Word.
He became defiant and angry and hostile.
I ended our meeting. This rather obvious example led me to ‘discern’ that I was right to “not give dogs what is holy, and not to throw pearls before swine, because they will trample them underfoot and turn to attack me and tear me to pieces”.
Tragic? Yes. Difficult Yes. Necessary? Also, yes. The takeaway? “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, because they will trample them underfoot and turn to attack you and tear you to pieces.”
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” – The Words of Jesus, Matthew 7:1-5
Jesus has been teaching us how we must begin to clear all the ‘interference’, that is, the sin, from our spirit, our soul and our body, so we can focus our hearts and our minds on the spiritual. He is starting with the basics of becoming ‘perfected’, teaching us to have a clear mental slate, so He can write His words upon our hearts and minds. This must happen before we can expect to receive from Him and to begin the transformation from the rebellious child to the mature disciple of Christ.
Lastly, in our previous episode, Jesus taught us that we are to focus on things of an eternal nature instead of the temporal; “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness” and do not be distracted with worries about necessities of the world because God will provide.
Now, Jesus is warning – yes, warning us – once again about our focus. This time He is admonishing the believer not to be the judge or a judge, for only God is able to judge. When He says, “For with the judgment you pronounce”, He is using the Greek word, ‘kríno’which is a judgment emphasizing a result of everlasting damnation and torment for the unredeemed. This carries with it the action of condemnation with eternal results. Also note, that Jesus is referring to a brother in the faith, “Or how can you say to your brother”, and the eternal benefits that come from the Lord’s judgment is always in favor of the redeemed. We have read, in Matthew 5:21-22, Jesus said, in a like manner, “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother (without cause) will be liable to judgment; whoever says ‘Raca’ to his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”
This admonition against making yourself a judge, is one of the most solemn indictments against the self-righteous, and one of the greatest obstacles to being a disciple of Jesus: You are in effect replacing God as the Judge and falsely making yourself decider of people’s eternal fate.
The answer to this error is to “first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly”.
Your Brother and Friend,
Mike Young
PS: Don’t be confused about ‘judging’. You are told to use discernment and to judge behaviors and intentions.“But realize this, that in the last days, difficult times will come. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these.” (2 timothy 3)
“Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
“Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” – The Words of Jesus, Matthew 6:25-34.
I began this series on “The Words of Jesus” asking, ‘what if The Word of God is true?’ I mean, what if His Words are literally true in ways we fail to recognize? People who personally encountered Jesus testified and reported on the Works He did, and this caused throngs to follow Him, stirred great controversies, created deadly conflicts and gave untold millions a greater hope for a new, vibrant, changed life, full of promise now and eternal hope of a home in heaven with God.
The Words Jesus spoke, and the Works Jesus did, changed the world.
I ask again, ‘what if we have been reading and misunderstanding what Jesus meant by His Words and the intentions of His Words? What if we have been misapplying what He taught? (Jesus was always concerned about His disciple’s lack of understanding and ‘lack of faith’.)
What if Jesus has been telling us how to actively engage His Word, so we could actually ‘live life more abundantly’ AND ‘do His Works, and even greaterworks’?
I realize I am wading into a potentially controversial area, but I am not referring to some kind of religious mysticism or extra-Biblical teaching, heresy or religious nonsense. (I believe, practice and teach a reformed view of the Bible.) But I do believe a great majority of the church, the teaching and practices of the church and the results produced by the early church have waned if not disappeared completely.
So, I ask one last time: What if the Word of God is
Producing the effect of being Sharper than any two-edged sword,
Capable of literally Penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit,
Dividing both joints and marrow, and
Somehow, literally able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart?
I would like to say that the verses we are looking at today are the cure for anxiety and worry, but like a coat on a cold day, it does you no good unless and until you put it on and wear it for a while. In other words, you have to do it and practice these words and let Jesus do His Work in you.
A better translation would say, ‘take no thought for your life’, that is to employ your ‘psuche’, or your soul, your psyche, which is the seat of your feelings, desires, affections and aversions. Another way of saying this in a colloquial way might be, ‘don’t waste your time and energy thinking about and worrying over ’what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on’.
Jesus then turns our attention to the root of the problem and to the remedy, saying, “seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness”. Once again, Jesus is teaching about the focus of our heart, soul and spirit. We are to stop focusing on the temporal, such as what you shall eat, drink or wear, after all, this is what the gentiles, the pagans and non-believers focus on. You are to set your mind, first, on the kingdom of God and His Righteousness!
Are we getting the message, here? Jesus has been teaching about clearing your mind of the clutter of life through fasting, so you can focus; then focusing your heart, your mind and your eyes on Him and His Kingdom. You and I are to be single-minded in that pursuit.
The question and the rebuke are, “will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”
The human soul, regarded as a moral being, is designed for eternal life, and it differs from the body in that it is not dissolved by death. If you believe your destiny is heaven, which you cannot see, believe also that God has provided, is providing and will continue to provide all the things you can see. He provides all your needs in and through Christ Jesus!
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6.
Pray on this. Think on this. Meditate on this. Practice this. Live this.
I read Bible commentaries and theologian’s reviews, and many times I find myself having to pick my jaw up off the floor. (That is an exaggeration, of course – but not by much.)
They, these ‘experts’, say that God is omniscient (all knowing), omnipresent (ever present), omnipotent (all powerful), and that is true! Then, in their next breath, they make statements or draw conclusions that say the exact opposite – and teach as much. Their defense is usually something like, “There are just some things we cannot know”. Well, there are some things we can absolutely know, so please either quit contradicting yourselves or just be silent. After all, you passed a bunch of tests and got your PhD or M Div, etc., and you now expect others to listen to you as an ‘expert’. I’ll tell you what. You now have a responsibility to either get it right or just be silent.
Let me give you a couple of glaring examples.
#1. A doctrinal statement made by a leader in a certain mainline Church: “Man was made in the image of God, but by his own will, sinned and rebelled against God and was put out of the Garden of Eden.” This type of teaching shows the shallow thinking and flaws in denominationalism, which frequently leads to the religious experts trying to put ‘square pegs into round holes.”
First: If God is omniscient, did He not know man would rebel? Did God make a mistake in His creation of mankind? The answer to both questions, a resounding ‘NO’. God knew and knows exactly what He is doing, all the time!
God knew He created mankind with a propensity to fail and sin (please click the preceding link for detail on this teaching). God knows exactly what was going to happen; and God planned a Savior to redeem humankind. It is all part of His process of perfecting humankind into His image and likeness!
It’s either that, or we cannot trust God to get it right the first time. Furthermore, it’s either that, or God is not omniscient (all knowing), omnipresent (ever present), omnipotent (all powerful) and He makes mistakes. But NO.
God is perfect, and He tells us, “Therefore, you are to be perfect (“esomai” = future tense, shall be, will be, it shall come to pass), as your heavenly Father is (esti = present tense) perfect.”
The Greek language reveals that perfection is God’s plan and the only ‘say-so’ we have in the matter, is whether we choose to follow Him or not. Once you become a Christian and follow Him, God will begin the process of perfection through His sanctifying of you and your life.
#2. We are taught that “all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God” (see Romans 3:23). This is an accurate quote from scriptures. It is usually presented and taught that sin is a series of behaviors or acts that reveal our corrupt nature. We are taught that we are born with a ‘sin nature’ inherited from Adam, which is true.
We are taught to believe that sin is your willful and deliberate rebellion against God, as if we had a choice. But, that type of teaching shows the shallow thinking and flaws in denominationalism, which frequently leads to the religious experts trying to put ‘square pegs into round holes.”
The Apostle Paul tells us, in Romans 7:21-25, that sin has always been and continues to be ever-present within your natural body, waging war against your natural mind, making you a prisoner, leading to death. Dear friends, know that God made you, from the beginning, with this flaw, this sin-nature! It was not your choice, though it is now your responsibility.
Could God have made you differently? YES, He could have. Did He not know the dilemma this would create in our lives? YES, He knew. Yet, He chose this method to subdue you and me and to show us our need for Him; to make us dependent on Him for His great salvation! And it is in this knowing that we are given a choice: Either suffer and die in our sins or accept the sufferings of Jesus as our gift of the propitiation for our sins, and live because of Him as our Savior.
(Note: The word ‘sin’ in the New Testament is ‘harmatia’ = a sin is the failure to ‘hit the mar; i.e., missing the mark; it means, more literally as having “no share“, or “no part of”; it is a loss, or a forfeiture. So, not hitting the target, or to miss the mark results in you forfeiting or losing your share of the inheritance God has laid up for you, both now and eternally.
Then what is the ‘target’ we are missing? It is the target of God’s perfection. Being perfected into the image and likeness of God which makes you a joint heir and friend of Jesus, sort of His ‘twin’, so to speak – perfected into God’s image and likeness.)
So, what does all of this tell us? It tells us that we have been set up, first to fail, then to be offered a rescue from that failure and finally to receive the victory of God’s Success in our lives! We were programmed to fail. But God prepared a Remedy, a Savior, Jesus Christ.
It has been God’s plan and purpose all along, to perfect us into Him image and likeness. And He is using this our failed nature to make us aware of our need for Him to save us and to bring us into His Holiness.
Why does God choose to do this and in this way? I do not know. No one knows. Only God knows. But now that we do know about these things, and we can also know what to do and how to get it done!
So, the next time you ‘sin’ and fall short of God’s glory, confess your sins. He is faithful and righteous, and He will forgive your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. (See 1 John 1:9). But you can do this only if you have surrendered your natural self and been remade, born again, as Jesus puts it. (See John 3:7)
So, the next time trials, troubles and tribulations come upon you, and you feel the pinch, pain and toils of life pressing down upon you, remember that in this you can rejoice, that even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, (you can know) that this is an opportunity for the proving of your faith – your faith, which is more precious than gold which perishes, (and that being) tested by fire, (the perfecting of), your faith may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ in and through your life! (See 1 Peter 1:6-7)
Your Brother and Friend,

SAVED: Strong’s concordance #4982 sozo, (pronounced, sode’-zo), meaning -to save, make whole, heal, to be whole; to be given purpose for your life.
To save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction; from injury or peril in your mortal body, in your mind, in your will and emotions (your soul).
To save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction; from injury or peril in your relationship with your spouse, your children and your family.
To save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction; from injury or peril in your relationships with your friends, acquaintances and the world at large.
To save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction; from injury or peril in your job, your career, your finances and all that God has entrusted to you.
Being saved literally means to save a suffering one (from perishing); to save one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health; to preserve one who is in danger of destruction, to save or rescue; to save in the technical biblical sense, to deliver from the penalties of the Messianic judgment.
I have been a youth soccer coach. One of my most interesting times was helping with a group of five-year-old girls. The trick when it came to teaching these little girls the game of soccer, as I learned, was to slip in some soccer tips between the flower picking, butterfly chasing and girl-chats.
If you are the type of coach who must have the player’s attention and demand they follow your instructions, this is not the team for you. These are little girls, first, and they are out there for a good time.
Don’t get me wrong. They like to kick the ball and run up and down the field, but they are easily distracted by the wonders around them. If you keep these things in mind, and enjoy the experience with these kids, you will go away with some great memories.
Things change as kids get older, though – or one might think. It is especially true when it comes to achievement and competition. The successful ones can be both competitive and achievement oriented, and somehow hang on to the gift of wonder.
Not everyone will agree with my previous statement, but later in life, when our bones, bodies and minds grow a little more brittle, and we are forced to slow things down, you will see what I mean.
There will come a time when you either lose interest or ability, and then all you have left is your memories. It is then that you will either have the ability to enjoy the remaining wonders of life, or you will just wonder – you will wonder what just happened!
I see it every day. The ‘great divide’ between those who have lived a long life and are still able to enjoy their remaining years, enjoying the remaining wonders of life; and those who have become old, resentful and cranky about, well, about just about everything. They are especially cranky about their loss. They will have lost the only thing they ever had – the ability to achieve and compete.
If you are a young adult or middle-aged, you still have time to adjust your course if needed. I won’t go through some serendipitous, feel-good list of things you can do, like ‘stop and smell the flowers’ or ‘watch a beautiful sunset with someone you love’. I will leave that to you.
But what I will suggest is just one of the principles which will lead you to a new world of wonder and reward.
Give that which you want to receive. The secret here is to give freely. In other words, you cannot get the benefits of giving if you are expecting something in return.
Give unconditional kindness.
Give unconditional goodness.
Give unconditional respect.
Give honor without conditions.
Give your love without conditions.
Give your time.
There is an ancient and proven saying that advises, “Give, and it will be given to you. Give and others will pour into your lap a good measure; it will be pressed down, shaken together, and running over, until there is no space left for more. It is by the standard of measurement you use when you do good to others, that it will be measured to you in return.” (See Luke 6:38)
This is not a magic formula. It is more like a seed. A seed you are patiently and carefully planting. Sometimes the ground will be hard and rocky and dry. But you plant anyway. Carefully, deliberately and patiently. You turn the soil. Water and fertilize the planting. Then one day you will stand in wonder and amazement as your giving begins to yield its fruit. Some a hundred times what you have sown; some sixty time and some thirty. (See Matthew 13:8).
There may be times that you want to doubt. But stay with it. It will bear fruit in its season. Believe me. (Or believe the thousands upon thousands who have discovered this secret of secrets to be true and have lived their lives out in the satisfaction of wonder and true success.)
And, believe me, the benefits will far outweigh your efforts.
Your Brother and Friend,
Mike Young.
(who is still in the process of trying to get this right).
It is interesting and telling that the Bible mentions the word CROWD or CROWDS, in relation to Jesus, 143 times in the New Testament (NASB version).
THE CROWDS GREW and followed Jesus everywhere. Here are just a few examples from the 143 mentions of crowds following Jesus:
“Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.” Matthew 4:25.
“When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.” Matthew 5:1.
“When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching;” Matthew 7:28.
“When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him.” Matthew 8:1.
“But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.” Matthew 9:8.
“After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” Matthew 9:33.
“And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach.” Matthew 13:2.
THE DYNAMICS OF THE CROWDS
The second thing interesting and telling about the crowds that followed Jesus is the dynamics.
There are 16,435 sermons on the subject of CROWDS at sermon central. One message struck a chord with me. The speaker described crowds, to include gangs. He spoke of why and how crowds form, the intentions of crowds, the makeup of crowds, the psychology of crowds, the effect of crowds and the different types of crowds.
Toward the end of the message, the speaker remarked, “And Christianity is one of the largest CROWDS in the world. In fact, it is almost like a “GANG”.
You see, “GANG members” have their own titles, their own logos and symbols they wear. They have their own music style, their way of dressing and acting. And, sometimes, GANG members can be intimidating, just like Christians.
“But, Christians have even more. They have their own buildings, artwork, radio and televisions and broadcast stations and satellite networks. They have their own banking systems, clothing lines, banks and religious centers.”
INTERESTING AND TELLING
After I read these passages, I wondered. “HAVE I BECOME A GANG MEMBER? Or part of the CROWD?”
After you read this letter, I’ll ask you, also, “Have you become a gang member? Or part of a crowd?
Watch carefully as the Crowds in the Bible, who followed Jesus around, go from
Inquisitive to
Amazement and
Adoration, and then become
Angry – every time. Every time.
THE THING ABOUT CROWDS
I am giving just a few examples here, how crowds acted and reacted to Jesus following the pattern of Inquisitive to Amazement & Adoration, to and then Angry:
INQUISITIVE
Matthew 4:23, “Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people. (v24) The news about Him spread throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, demoniacs, epileptics, paralytics; and He healed them. Verse 25. Large CROWDS followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
AMAZED.
Matthew 7:28,“When Jesus had finished these words, the CROWDS were amazed at His teaching;
Matthew 8:1,“When Jesus came down from the mountain, large CROWDS followed Him.
Matthew 9:8, “But when the CROWDS saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew 14:19, “Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the CROWDS, verse 20, and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets.
Verse 21. “There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.
ADORED.
Matthew 21:9, “The CROWDS going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!”
ANGRY.
John 6:24 So when the CROWD saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
Verse 51. “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
Verse 53. “So, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
Verse 54. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
Verse 55. “For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.
Verse 66. ” As a result of this, many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.
Matthew 26:55, “At that time Jesus said to the CROWDS, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me.
Matthew 27:20, “But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death.
What has been your pattern while following Jesus, so far?
Were you, initially, INQUISITIVE?
Have you come to be AMAZED by Him?
Do you ADORE Him?
BEWARE: The next step in this pattern is ANGER. It doesn’t flare up all-at-once. It is gradual and progressive. As long as you think you are getting what you expected, you are full of wonder and amazement, showing adoration for God.
But then, perhaps the music at church, has become less than what you expect, and you become annoyed. Maybe the sermons aren’t ‘feeding you’ just right, so you have become dissatisfied. Maybe the sermons are too ‘hard’ or about Bible subjects you don’t like, such as sin or hell, and they bother you so you miss a Sunday here and there. And maybe, on one of those missed Sundays, nobody from the church called to see about you, and you feel neglected or ignored, so you get angry. Yep. ANGER sets in and the patter is complete.
Now, you should ask yourself, are you following Jesus as His disciple? Or, are you just following Him around – as part of the CROWD?
This is what can happen when you become part of the CHURCH CROWD.
Jesus did not call us to be THE CROWD. He called us to BE THE CHURCH and to BE HIS DISCIPLES who go and make other disciples.
We are NOT to be part of the church gang, following after the conferences, the church programs and becoming just a weekly attendee of the religious services (aka, worship services).
Finally, regarding the dynamics of these crowds of people who were following Jesus is that when Jesus began to make clear that there is a difference between just following Him around and actually FOLLOWING HIM – the crowds began to thin.
And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.” Matthew 4:19.
“And another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Matthew 8:21-22.
“And the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.” Matthew 10:38.
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24.
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” Matthew 19:21.
And He summoned the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me”.Mark 1:17.
“Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:61-62.
It was becoming clear, to many, that there is a cost associated with following Jesus as a disciple – the crowds began to thin.
And in the end, when the pressure to follow Jesus in any circumstance, it came down to one:
Matthew 14:22, “Immediately afterward He compelled the (twelve)disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. Verse 23. After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. Verse 24. But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. Verse 25. And in the fourth watch of the night, He came to them, walking on the sea. Verse 26. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. Verse 27. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Verse 28. “Peter responded and said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” Verse 29. And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.
Matthew 14:29 “And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”
After all the crowds of people saw Jesus and saw the miracles, only ONE believed enough to take the risk and get out of the boat!
I ask one last time: “What has been your pattern while following Jesus, so far?”
Were you, initially, INQUISITIVE?
Have you come to be AMAZED by Him?
Do you ADORE Him?
Do you believe Him?
Will you actually follow Him?
BE the ONE and answer His call. Turn this world BACK upside down in Jesus Name! BE THE ONE – Now, go and rescue just ONE.
Luke Chapter Nine – Ministry of the Twelve Disciples of Jesus.
Luke 9:1, Now He called the twelve (disciples) together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and the power to heal diseases. Verse 2. And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. Verse 3. And He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics. Verse 4. And whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that city. Verse 5. And as for all who do not receive you, when you leave that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” Verse 6. And as they were leaving, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
Luke Chapter 10 – The Seventy (two) Sent Out by Jesus.
Luke 10:1, Now after this the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. Verse 2. And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Verse 3. Go; behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves. Verse 4. Carry no money belt, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the way. Verse 5. And whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ Verse 6. And if a man of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. Verse 7. Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they provide; for the laborer is deserving of his wages. Do not move from house to house. Verse 8. Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is served to you; Verse 9, and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ Verse 10. But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, Verse 11, ‘Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ Verse 12. I say to you, it will be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that city.
The Joyful Results
Luke 10:17, Now the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name!” Verse 18. And He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19Behold, I have given you authority to walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Verse 20. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
Matthew Chapter 10 – The Twelve Disciples; Instructions for Service
Matthew 10:1, Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.
Verse 2. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; and James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Verse 3, Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Verse 4. Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed Him.
Verse 5. These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, “Do not go on a road to Gentiles, and do not enter a city of Samaritans; Verse 6, but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Verse 7. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Verse 8. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Verse 9. Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, Verse 10, or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his support. Verse 11. And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave that city.
There have been and there are influential and powerful people in the Church who have said and will say that what Jesus did as it is recorded in Matthew chapters ten and eleven and in Luke chapters nine and ten was NOT a model for future missionary evangelism. They say it was just a record of Jesus sending His disciples and followers to the Jew only; or they say it was simply Jesus laying the groundwork for future missionary and evangelistic efforts, which, by necessity, would change and evolve with the changes in technology, social norms and advances in education.
To these ideas I say, nonsense!
WHY, OH WHY?
Why would God record ‘temporary and unimportant information or events’ in His Word (The Bible) – which is meant to be eternal? Are we just being entertained?
No. He would not, He did not and He does not.
Every word in the Bible, all scripture is God-breathed, given by divine inspiration, and is profitable for instruction, for conviction of sin, for correction of error and restoration to obedience, for training in righteousness, that is for learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage; so that the man (or woman) of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work. (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
I am a simple thinker; possibly hampered, being a linear thinker, for the most part. But I also consider myself a critical thinker. I like to try, when reading credible sources which suggest they offer insight to truth into our ever devolving world, first, to take what I read at face value wherever and whenever possible. I then try analyze available facts, evidence, observations, and arguments in order to form a judgement by the application of rational, skeptical, analyses and evaluation.
Please note, I am telling you these things about me because I am not alone. Everyone has a standard – a believability plumbline – by which they measure and observe the things they see, hear and read for its veracity. So, everyone will be biased in some fashion to some degree. It is unavoidable if one is to form and draw their own conclusions. Therefore, some might say that I am biased because I filter all that I read and consider through the lenses of the Bible – on of the oldest and most carefully studied, critiqued and guarded documents in existence. The Bible is a record of history and of faith, which has shaped our world. I, by no means, discount secular world history, but it has been written, debated and disputed by brilliant minds who regularly disagree on many issues and points, depending on the points of view taken. Mine is the Bible.
Therefore, I refuse to stray too far from the obvious when it is framed within the context of the whole. And the obvious face value reading of Matthew chapters ten and eleven and Luke chapters nine and ten, say that Jesus called the twelve (disciples) together and gave them power and authority over all the demons, and the power to heal diseases. and to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. He told them to take nothing for their journey, (neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics), and whatever house they would enter, they were to stay there until they left that city.
THE EARLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
“The early Christians believed that Jesus is the very presence of God. They believed that the body of Christ, the church, constitutes a temple. When the Lord Jesus was on earth, He made some radically negative statements about the Jewish Temple.’
“The one that angered many Jews most was His announcement that if the Temple was destroyed, He would build a new one in three days! (See John 2:19-21.)
“Though Jesus was referring to the Temple that existed in the architectural sense, He was really speaking of His body. Jesus said that after this temple was destroyed, He would raise it up in three days.
“He was referring to the real temple—the Ekklesia—which He raised up in Himself on the third day (Ephesians 2:6).
“Since Christ has risen, we Christians have become the temple of God.
“At His resurrection, Christ became a “life-giving spirit” (1 Corinthians 15:45). Therefore, He could take up residence in the believers, thus making them His Temple, His house. It is for this reason that the New Testament always reserves the word church (ekklesia) for the people of God. It never uses this word to refer to a building of any sort.” (Excerpts within quotation marks are from Frank Viola & George Barna’s book, “Pagan Christianity”, Tyndale Publishing, 2002, 2008)
“When Christianity was born, it was the only religion on the planet that had no sacred objects, no sacred persons, and no sacred spaces.
“Although surrounded by Jewish synagogues and pagan temples, the early Christians were the only religious people on earth who did not erect sacred buildings for their worship. The Christian faith was born in homes, out in courtyards, and along roadsides. For the first three centuries, the Christians did not have any special buildings!
“As one scholar put it, “The Christianity that conquered the Roman Empire was essentially a home-centered movement.”
“Meeting in homes was a conscious choice of the early Christians.” It was a coming together in a more intimate setting, a ones’ home. Very little could be hidden in such an environment.
THE DRIFT BEGINS – 391 A.D.
The Church was barely out of its infancy when the religious spirit of innovation appeared, in the late second and third centuries, and a shift occurred.
“Christians not only adopted sacred spaces, they also had created sacred objects. (They would soon develop a sacred priesthood.) It might seem they had forgotten Moses and the golden calf.
“In all of this, the second and third century Christians began to assimilate the magical mind-set that characterized existent pagan thinking.
“These factors made the Christian terrain ready for the man who would be responsible for creating church buildings. In AD 327, Constantine began erecting the first church buildings throughout the Roman Empire, some at public expense.’ In so doing, he followed the path of the pagans in constructing temples to honor God. Augustine of Hippo (later, sainted by the Catholic church), began his work of making the Christian Movement ‘legitimate’ by government and Catholic standards.
“Interestingly, he named his church buildings after saints — just as the pagans named their temples after gods. Constantine built his first church buildings upon the cemeteries where the Christians held meals for the dead saints. (I ask, WHAT WOULD YOU CALL AN ACT LIKE THAT?)
“Constantine brought peace for all Christians.'” Under his reign, the Christian faith had become legitimate. In fact, it had risen to a status greater than Judaism and paganism.
“For these reasons, the Christians saw Constantine’s rise to emperor as an act of God. Here was God’s instrument who had come to their rescue.
“Christianity and Roman culture were now melded together.” (Again I ask, WHAT WOULD YOU CALL THAT?)
“The Christian building demonstrates that the church, whether she wanted it or not, had entered into a close alliance with pagan culture.’ As Will Durant, author of The Story of Civilization (a sweeping, eleven-volume work on world history that earned him a Pulitzer Prize), put it, “Pagan isles remained in the spreading Christian sea.”
“As one historian put it, “Church buildings took the place of temples; church endowments replaced temple lands and funds.”
“Under Constantine, tax-exempt status was granted for all church property.
“Consequently, the story of the church building is the sad saga of Christianity borrowing from heathen culture and radically transforming the face of our faith.
“To put it bluntly, the church buildings of the Constantinian and post-Constantinian era essentially became holy shrines. The Christians embraced the concept of the physical temple. They imbibed the pagan idea that there exists a special place where God dwells in a special way. And that place is made “with hands.”‘ (Once again, I ask, WHAT WOULD YOU CALL AN ACT LIKE THAT?)
“As with other pagan customs that were absorbed into the Christian faith (such as the liturgy, the sermon, clerical vestments, and hierarchical leadership structure), third- and fourth-century Christians incorrectly attributed the origin of the church building to the Old Testament. But this was misguided thinking.”
“Most Americans are struggling to clarify their identity. They tend to see themselves as unique individuals, Americans, members of their family, occupational professionals, consumers, and then as followers of Christ — in that order of priority.
“In the minds and hearts of most Americans — even those whose beliefs classify them as “born-again Christians”— their identity as a follower of Christ pales in importance in comparison to the other roles they embrace. (WHAT WOULD YOU CALL THAT MINDSET?)
“Oddly, most of the born again Christians consider themselves to be servants of God and to have been transformed by their faith in Christ.
“Clearly, there are some missing connections in this self-evaluation. Perhaps the confusion is due to the enormous number of inter-actions and responsibilities that people take on each day.
“Maybe it has to do with the disjointed, topical teaching that most of us receive from our churches. It may even be attributable to the lure of competing perspectives and images bombarding us from the ever-present media.
“The bottom line is really quite simple: You are a priest of God, a minister of the Lord Jesus Christ, and a member of His glorious body. Through your declaration of allegiance to Jesus and your stated desire to live with Him forever, you have a responsibility to be a functioning priest, minister, and member of the Body .
“The organized church has moved down a winding path over the past two thousand years. The only way to get it back on track is for each of us to begin prayerfully exploring the original plan that God had for His people, and then to be willing to respond faithfully to that plan. (Excerpts from Frank Viola & George Barna’s book, “Pagan Christianity”, Tyndale Publishing, 2002, 2008).
I say, “enough of this dangerous game of creative re-imaginative religious realignment.
I would like to suggest that we break the current man-made rigid religious molds. That we break these chains of manmade traditions that are binding us. I suggest that we go back to the beginning. The beginning of what Jesus taught and modeled and re-learn something old, making it new.
It is time we stopped ‘going to church’ to be served (i.e., to get what we want), and start assembling as the Church in order to serve God by finding OUR PURPOSE AS THE CHURCHby doing the works of Jesus!

“I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless you repent, that is, change your inner self–your old way of thinking, live changed lives and become like children trusting, humble, and forgiving, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives and welcomes one child like this in My name receives Me.”
A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS – Serving God and Money
Creative, Causative, Prophetic, Instructional – Part 24
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. – The Words of Jesus, Matthew 6 :24.
Beginning in Matthew 6:19, Jesus is teaching how we must begin to clear all the ‘interference’, that is, the sin, from our spirit, our soul and our body. He is starting with the basics of becoming ‘perfected’, teaching us to have a clear mental slate, so He can write His words upon our hearts and minds. This must happen before we can expect to receive from Him and to begin the transformation from the rebellious child to the mature disciple of Christ.
We are told to lay up treasures in heaven, for where our treasure is, there our heart will be also, and it is from the heart that spring the issues of life.
Now, Jesus is teaching about being single-minded. He is saying to clear away the clutter of double-mindedness. The Apostle James warns that the double minded person is unstable in all his or her ways and should not expect they will receive anything from the Lord. (James 1:5-8)
This is the most difficult of teachings, but it is representative of what is required to be a disciple of Jesus. Listen carefully friend, Jesus is clearly teaching that if you want to be saved that you must,
“Sell all that you have, distribute it to the poor, then you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Luke 18:22)
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. (Matthew 10:37-38)
The focus of your heart, of your eyes of your mind, emotions and your will must be solely on Jesus as your Lord and Master.
Money is the only other thing in life we pursue our entire lives for our support and our livelihood. Jesus is saying, in no uncertain terms, that not you, not the preacher, not the church, no not anyone, can depend on God and on money. It has to be one or the other. You cannot serve God and money, for they will bring your mind, soul and spirit into an unresolvable conflict, and you will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. This is both a spiritual truth and a spiritual law.
If you try to make both God and Money your ‘master’, you will have rendered yourself to become like the ‘the salt that has lost his saltiness, which cannot be restored. It is therefore worthless, good for nothing except to be cast out, and trodden under the foot of men.’ (Matthew 5:13)
This teaching, to our great harm, is the one most often compromised, twisted to fit our own thinking or completely disregarded, by both the individual calling themselves, ‘Christian’ and by the Church.
So, where does this leave you? Do you now take a vow of poverty? Please, don’t be silly. The Apostle Paul helps us understand when he says, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) We all need some amount of money to live in this world. Some can handle small amounts, others can safely and effectively deal with great wealth. Either way, you must depend completely on God to supply your needs, then do what He has directed. Do not lose the focus of your calling to the mission and to Christ as your Lord and Master, and never compromise.
God (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) and the teaching of scriptures always take priority. There are no ‘2nd choices’ or ‘2nd place’.
Sola Christo. Sola Scriptura.
Your Brother and Friend,
Mike Young
FOR YOUR EDIFICATION: The word for “serve” in these verses is the Greek word, ‘douleuó’, which means to serve as a slave, having all personal ownership-rights assigned to the owner; to willingly give over the prerogative to be self-governing. The pursuit or love of money will enslave you.
This word also describes someone who belongs to another; a bond-slave, without any ownership rights of their own. Ironically, this is used with the highest dignity in the New Testament – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ’s authority as His devoted followers.
This is why you must choose. Don’t be deceived. It cannot be both.
