FOXES HAVE HOLES, BIRDS HAVE NESTS

“Foxes Have Holes and Birds Have Nests”

Do you know where these sayings come from?

Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.”

Matthew 8:19 – 22

That is an odd thing to say to someone who wants to follow you, isn’t it?  What does Jesus mean?

A scribe in the Bible, was a man learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings, an interpreter, teacher. Scribes examined the more difficult and subtle questions of the law; added to the Mosaic law decisions of various kinds thought to elucidate its meaning and scope, and did this to the detriment of religion.

Scribes were trained and enrolled in the Sanhedrin political and judicial council headed by the high priest (in his role as civil ruler); in the Talmud it is described as primarily a religious legislative body headed by sages, though with certain political and judicial functions. (notes from the Online Bible edition)

So, Jesus tells this Scribe, this judge and sage, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

Foxes retreat to the safety of their lair.  They live and remain in their holes, venturing out only to gather food and water, then they scurry back to the safety of the hole.  Their focus is on their safety and their hole in the ground.

Same for the birds. They have the nest they build to lay eggs and raise their young.  A safe place.  They, too, venture out for food, but their focus is on the safety of a nest.

BUILDING HIS CHURCH

Jesus, however, is on mission.  He knows that He is the permanent sacrifice for the reconciliation of all people to God.  He is doing the work of His Father.  Time is short.

He is telling this scribe and His disciples that He has neither the time nor the intention of settling into a “hole in the ground” or building “a nest” into which they can settle down and feel safe.

He has no time for building programs, no time for social programs, no time for endless debate over the ‘cummin and dill’ of the Torah or the endless list of man’s constructs designed to explain and contain the Holy Scriptures.  No time for holes in the ground or nests.

Jesus is saying that He is the foundation of His Church, and He is on the move, building His Church.   He is the foundation for Temple of the Holy Spirit in the hearts, minds and souls of people.

His Church is Spiritually alive, organic and naturally fluid and on the move; It cannot be contained by a program or an institution. It is powerful, transformative, life changing, world altering and cannot be taught in a school on religion.

If you come to know Jesus, you will know His Church, and it is not to be found in a building, a hole in the ground or a nest.

A.D. 1 – THE CHURCH WAS A MOVEMENT

In AD 1 The Church of Jesus Christ, The Body of Christ, had no buildings, little money and no wealth. The Church was a Movement.

Jesus said to make disciples; collect no money except to make your journey.

However, the penalty for becoming a Christian was often death.

Still, the Church grew exponentially.

A.D. 49 – THE CHURCH BECAME A PHILOSOPHY

The Church expanded into Greece. The Church became a philosophy to many. The Church grew and size and influence.

A.D. 313 – THE CHURCH BECAME AN INSTITUTION

The Church expanded into Rome and it gained recognition. It grew in power and popularity. It obtained wealth, buildings, property and influence. It became an institution.

A.D. 380 – THE CHURCH BECAME A CULTURE

The Church expanded into Europe. It was becoming a worldwide phenomenon. It grew in wealth, stature, power and influence. It had become a culture.

A.D. 1607 – THE CHURCH BECAME A BUSINESS

The Church reaches America.

A.D. 1681 – The Church became corporate.

It had become a business and incorporated. It became regulated by the government.

The Corporate Church grew. It needed money to support growth and expansion, which meant the Corporate Church needed more people.

A.D. – 1777 The state of Virginia granted tax exemption to houses of worship.

A.D. – 1894 The corporate church was granted tax exemptions by the Federal Government.

A.D. 1954 The Federal Government regulated what a church could and could not say in order to retain tax-exempt status.

The church continued to grow, and in order to attract more people, the Corporate Church lowered its membership and doctrinal standards. More people became ‘members’ and gave more money to support more growth.

The Church corporation is complete with leaders, boards and membership and a business model.

Local churches compete against one another for members (customers). The church is selling itself in “three line slogans”.

The Church members now have choices and have become religious consumers. Church people can shop around for the religious brand and standards that best suits them. (2 Timothy 3)

The Leadership (pastors and preachers) have become CEOs, disciples have become church leaders, growing their 501(c)(3) business models.

Record numbers of pastors quitting because of stress, burnout or are being fired by their congregations (some stats say 1500 – 1700 leave “the ministry” each month).

Church debt in America soars; church foreclosures soar.

A.D. 1968 – THE CHURCH DEFIES GOD and Ordains Homosexuals As Clergy.

A.D. 1972  –The United church of Christ ordains homosexual clergy

A.D. 2010 – The Lutheran church ordains homosexual clergy

A.D. 2012 – The Presbyterian church, USA, ordains homosexual clergy

The Episcopal Church in the United States and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) have also allowed ordination of openly gay and lesbian candidates for ministry for some years.

Internationally, churches that have ordained openly lesbian or gay clergy include the Church of Scotland, the Church of England, the Church in Wales, the Church of Sweden, the Church of Norway, the Church of Denmark, the Church of Iceland, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Methodist Church in Britain, the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, the United Protestant Church in Belgium, the Swiss Reformed Church, the United Protestant Church of France, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Anglican Church in Canada, the Old Catholic Church, the Czechoslovak Hussite Church and the United Church of Christ in Japan.

A.D. 2020 – The Church Is Losing and Has Lost Influence and Credibility.

The church is losing members. So they change their message and their methods to one resembling the ways of the world so they can ‘stay in business’.

A.D. 2020 – A STRANGE NEW GOSPEL.

The church is teaching and living a different Gospel which is clothed in the staged entertainment of colorful flashing lights, banging cymbals, sensual drum beats, and pulsating music that stimulates the flesh, coupled with the promise of cheap grace, “Drive through salvation and spiritual fast food”. A very different Gospel, from the one of the Apostles.

THE AGE OF APOSTASY IS WELL UNDER WAY

We, The Church, The Body of Christ, You and I, must return to Jesus’ Way.  We must be doing those Works that Jesus does and the way He does them.

Jesus faced the same circumstances during His earthly ministry. But He and His disciples stood out from the crowd. They were counter-cultural. They were reviled, mocked, spit upon, and persecuted. And they changed the world and glorified God!

A.D. 2025 – The postmodern church is inventing new ways of ‘doing church’ in order to connect to the culture is an utter compromise of God’s Word. It is an utter failure! God has said that we are not of this world – we are not to think and act like it.

Please stop looking, acting and dressing like pagans. It is shameful and puts the message of Christ to shame.

Christ Alone is all you’ll ever need – The Bible Alone is enough – Faith in Jesus alone is all-sufficient.

Let’s think, act and be like Jesus. You be the standard-bearer. Honor Him. Others will follow.

Mike Young

The False Church Emerges

The Jesus Model for Ministry

What Is This Strange New Gospel

THE BOOK OF JOHN – CHAPTER 1, part 2 – The Witness of John, The Word Made Flesh

THE BOOK OF JOHN – CHAPTER 1, part 2

(Verses 6 – 18)

The Witness of John the Baptist

As mysterious as they seem, the first five verses of the book of John, established the origin the nature, the identification, the effect, the purpose and the creative power of The Word. The Word which was with God and is God. And, although John is a first-hand witness to these things, the first five verses come only by way of inspiration and revelation from God. What John has said, and you are reading, transcends the human capacity to fully understand. It is accepted by faith, and it is validated by the results which follow.

The Witness John the Baptist

John 1:6, A man came, one sent from God, and his name was John. Verse 7. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. Verse 8. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

(Commentary Break): John is the forerunner and a model for all disciples who come after him regarding how we should identify ourselves as witnesses to the Light so that all might believe through us. We should never assume to be equal to that Light, but only to testify about the Light.

These matters are not just for our information. They are our model. (Information that is not applied is just idle information, good for very little.) When this Gospel Message is applied, it is the power of God unto salvation. Handle it accurately and with great care. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 9. This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. Verse 10. He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not know Him. Verse 11. He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him. Verse 12. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe and trust in His name, verse 13, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

(Commentary Break): John, once again in these foregoing verses, is the conduit of the prophetic Voice of God. God, through John, is speaking of the mysteries and oracles of God. “He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not know Him”. Try as you might to imagine that The Word with God is God, was already in the world and the world came into being! And yet the world did not know Him? To the unregenerate and untrained mind, this must sound like complete foolishness or a madman’s prose. Yet this is Truth. It is The Prophetic Truth of God that continues to live and reverberate throughout time. It is The Word and Breath of God, and all who receive Him, He gives them the right to become the children of God. (Let that ring in your ears; Meditate on it. Let it sink deep into your mind, soul and heart.)

(Subscribe Here —>)

Finally, The Word, God’s creative Voice, Jesus, came into His own creation, and His created ones did not know Him. How could that have been? It was and is God’s Plan. God had planned from the beginning to perfect His creation into His image and likeness, giving His created a free-will in which they could choose life and life more abundant, now; and later, have eternal life with Him. Some will choose to reject Him and thus will never know Him. Those will perish in great darkness and eternal fire. Those who choose Him will know Him and will have their names written in the Lamb’s Book of life and will live eternally in the House of The Lord. (End Commentary Break).

The Word Made Flesh

Verse 14. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Verse 15.

(Commentary Break): Again, John utters prophetic mysteries that have been manifested and have appeared in the physical world. The Word (Logos) became flesh (sarx). (“logos” is a multifaceted Greek word that encompasses a range of meanings including “word,” “speech,” “reason,” “doctrine,” and “account.” In the New Testament, “logos” is used to denote the spoken or written word, the message of the Gospel, and, most profoundly, as a title for Jesus Christ, emphasizing His role as the divine Word of God incarnate. Theologically, “logos” signifies the communication of God’s will and truth to humanity.

The Apostle John, in his Gospel, appropriates this term to articulate the preexistence and divinity of Christ, presenting Jesus as the ultimate revelation of God.

God in the flesh, with all the flaws and passion of the flesh, yet without sin. The greatest of all miracles, before our eyes. Yet, some will reject Him and upon them will rest the wrath of a Just God. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 15. John testified about Him and called out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who is coming after me has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.’” Verse 16. For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. Verse 17. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. Verse 18. No one has seen God at any time; God the only Son, who is in the arms of the Father, He has explained Him.

(Commentary Break): Rather than judgment, condemnation or wrath, Jesus had come to bring “grace upon grace”, the unmerited favor and kindness of God towards humanity compounded and poured out to you. It encompasses the idea of divine assistance given to humans for their salvation, transformation and sanctification.

This grace is deepened and transformed to express the profound and unconditional love of God towards humanity, which is not based on human merit but on God’s own character and purpose.

And now His overwhelming grace is compounded once again, this time with truth. The implication of these words are so staggering that the words themselves cannot do justice to their reality.

“NO EYE HAS SEEN AND NO EAR HAS HEARD, AND WHICH HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HUMAN HEART, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.” (1 Corinthians 2:9).  (End Commentary Break).

(End Chapter 1, part 2, verses 6 through 18.)

REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS NOW AT HAND

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO

REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS NOW AT HAND

If you have your Bible, we will be looking at TWO verses. John 3:16 as our introduction and Matthew 4:17 as our focus verse. (And yes that is rights. Just 2 verses today).

Before we start, I want to say something about The Bible and why it is important that we take the time and effort to know the Word it contains and why we must be careful to stay within its boundaries and confines. The Bible Itself says we must not stray. Joshua 1:7-8 says, we are “not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may achieve success wherever you go. (And that) this Book shall not depart from our mouth, but we shall meditate on it day and night, and that we are careful to do according to all that is written in it; for it is only then you will make your way prosperous, (as the Bible describes prosperity), and then you will achieve success” in the matters concerning this Word and in its application to our lives.

Secondly, the Bible tells us that it is the without any error, inerrant, infallible, indestructible, and the inspired, Breathed Word of God.

It is CREATIVE, CAUSATIVE, INSTRUCTIONAL and PROPHETIC. It is Prophetic in the sense that it tells the Truth to you and when you are in Him and His Word is in you, it will tell the Truth THROUGH you!

And finally, it is “profitable for teaching, for our rebuke, for our correction, for our training in righteousness; so that we, the men and women of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.”

THE GOOD NEWS!

John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him”.

So that the word might be SAVED through Him. SAVED. Just what does that word bring to your mind?

“To be saved – SOZO – in the Bible, means to be rescued from destruction and brought into divine safety“. To deliver or protect— (From Strong’s Bible Concordance).

SAVED:  To be made safe, to be made healthy, to be made whole (complete with purpose), NOW and for all of eternity,

Made safe, to be made healthy, to be made whole In your body. In your mind. In your soul and spirit.

Made safe, to be made healthy, to be made whole In your home. With your family, your children, your spouse and relatives. In your work. With your friends. In every aspect of your life.

(This is not a magic formula or a spell. It is the Word of God through your faithful, submissive obedience in following Jesus.

This is the Good News that God gave John to proclaim.

This is the Good News and the reason God sent us His Son. Jesus.

This is the Good News that Jesus proclaims to the world, then and now.

And this is the reason Jesus sends His followers, His disciples, into the world – to tell the world about this Good News.

And how would that to happen?

Now, come with me as we step back in time to around A.D. 30, when Jesus appeared on the scene in Galilee.

Matthew 4, verses 12 through 17.

Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled:

“THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI,

BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES —

THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT,  (SAW A GREAT LIGH”)

AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH,

UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED.”   A LIGHT DAWNED.

Gensis 1:1 tells us that God said “let there be light”; and the Words of God in Matthew 4:16 are no less significant, no less creative and now less prophetic that those from Genesis 1.

Then In verse 17,  read, From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

This is Jesus’ first known and His shortest sermon.

In Matthew 4:17, the Bible tells us, FIRST that From that time what time is this? This can be considered as one of the most important historical time markers in the Bible – it is a line of demarcation.

This is the point Jesus began His earthly ministry as commissioned by God the Father, and

This is beginning of the invasion of earth by the kingdom of heaven! The greatest of all spiritual wars has begun!

GOD is announcing that He has come back to reclaim what is His and those who are His! He is here to take His land and to take His kids back from the devil’s captivity – you and me and millions more like us.

This event is a NEW dawn, a NEW beginning – no less fantastic that when in the beginning God said, “LET THERE BE LIGHT”, GOD is now saying “A GREAT LIGHT HAS DAWNED”.

And like we recited earlier in the Lord’s Prayer, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”, Jesus is saying that time is at hand!

Next we are told that, “Jesus began to preach and say”,  the word used here from the Greek language is kerusso’. This is NOT a casual statement nor is it just a narration. It is a word of formality, gravity and an authority which must be listened to and obeyed; something which has been done, first in the Spiritual realm and to be manifest in the natural.  It is not a general statement nor is it a request.  It is PROPHETIC command. Kerusso!

Next, let’s notice that Jesus says “Repent”. What is often overlooked but should be  glaringly obvious is that Jesus does not tell us WHAT to repent from. We typically assume we are to repent of our sins. But that is not what He actually says. He simply says, “Repent”.

But REPENT from what?

Repent, (‘metanoeo’), from the Greek, means to change one’s mind – to change one’s mind for the better.

And if it is that we are to REPENT of our sins, it is just as important to know that the word Sin, from the Greek word ‘hamartia’ – literally means to be without a share in; to miss the mark. To miss the mark both of  all that God has intended for your life and all that He has for you now, and for all of eternity.

It is commonly accepted that Jesus meant that we are to heartily amend, with abhorrence of our past sins. And it can mean that and it DOES mean that. BUT IT MEANS SO MUCH MORE.

So, when Jesus says to REPENT, the overall meaning, the connotation of this word it to CHANGE AND CONDITION YOUR MIND TO THINK LIKE JESUS, TO SEE THINGS FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE AND TO RESPOND IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCE AND SITUATIONS OF LIFE AND DEATH AS JESUS DOES.

This requires a radical redefining or our understand. It demands that we turn our minds to what Jesus sas and what He means – even if it makes us uncomfortable.

Jesus is saying that REPENTANCE is a radical reformation and shift in our paradigms. It is a change in our attitudes, and of our mindset, our will and emotions from how we naturally see things to HOW JESUS SEES THINGS. It is a change in the all the choices we make in life so WE CAN SEE THEM AS JESUS SEES THEM.

Jesus is saying we must change how see or view and deal with our relationships with others, our families, marriage, and even our disputes. How we react to being wronged, how we give of ourselves, of our time of our resources. How we view work, money, wealth, and anxiety. How we view our community, our country and the world and how we view the lost – from how we see them to HOW HE SEES THEM. We must see the world around us and what Jesus is commanding of us AS HE SEES IT.  THAT IS TRUE AND COMPLETE REPENTANCE.

We begin to see that the Words of Jesus are life giving words. They protect us, they guide and direct us. They strengthen us and provide us with purpose and hope.

And finally, in this verse, Jesus says, for the kingdom of heaven is now at hand (The words ” the Kingdom of Heaven” are so descriptive that you must take the definition of each word and consider the impact and importance.

The Kingdom of God is now at hand, describes the long awaited arrival of the Messiah who is now to establish His Kingdom on earth. As the “Lord’s Prayer” even says, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”.  A Kingdom of forgiveness, of grace, mercy, justice and eternal salvation.  A Kingdom conquering death, disease, sin and darkness.

His Kingdom is a royal power, a kingship, dominion, rule and the right or authority to rule over a kingdom; the royal power of Jesus as the triumphant Messiah and the royal power and dignity conferred on Christians in the Messiah’s kingdom.” This is our calling and our role as Christians, Disciples of Jesus,

And finally, the phrase, the kingdom is now “At hand.”  (“At hand” comes from a Greek word of with a meaning like the ‘crook of your arm’ and with the action like a mounting wave which has the power to knock you off your feet and roll you over and over; indicating a distance which is as close as your hand is to your wrist, AND as Luke 17:21 puts it, “the kingdom of God is now within you”. Romans 10:8 ALSO tells us, that “THE WORD (OF GOD) IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”.

Jesus is saying, we are to “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is now at hand”.

Now, FINALLY – Here is a Mystery:

Believe it or not, and as strange as it may seem, the One who spoke these prophetic words, possesses the power which is able to transform your life, so radically, so completely, so thoroughly, that those who knew you beforehand, would hardly recognize you afterwards.  In fact, if and when you embrace and absorbed His Words into your heart, mind and soul as His devoted follower you would hardly be able to recognize yourself when the process is complete.

You might even have to ask yourself, “Can I really be that man or that woman who went about under my name before?”

You are, in one sense the same person, but in another sense, you will have become someone utterly different. Made new. Reborn. A new creation.

This can be most easily accepted by a new believer, as the rest of us may think, “yes, I have already done this”. But when Jesus, speaking to Nicodemus, said, “you must be born again”, He spoke those words in the Aorist tense which means this is a continuing action. The Aorist tense has no regard for the past, present or the future. In this tense they are one-in-the-same. In others words, “In Christ Jesus, you are born anew, each and every day”. He is not saying you must be saved over and over. He is saying our repentance and rebirth in Him is made new and refreshed each and every day. This sanctifying process of perfecting us into the image and likeness of Jesus continues until we are, one day, home with Him, at last!

Please understand that what I am about to say, does not negate the trials, tribulations and troubles we will face in this life. They are part of our being sanctified. Nonetheless, this intensely real power to which I am referring, can pick you up today – right now – from the midst of loneliness, failure, ruin, misery, despair or any difficulty, and in the twinkling of an eye, as Paul said, IN THE MIDST OF THE PROBLEMS YOU FACE IN LIFE, He can begin to solve those problems, smooth out the difficulties, cut you free from entanglements and place you clear, safe and happy upon the highroad of freedom and opportunity – IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND HIS PLAN AND PRUPOSES, AND ARE WILLING AND ABLE TO ENDURE THIS PROCESS.

Does this mean your will always be physically well or mentally strong or rich by the worlds standards or famous? No. No. A thousand times no.
But it does mean that you can find purpose and meaning and usefulness in even the worst of life’s circumstances.

He can free you to go and shape your life as God would have it – a life full with purpose and of promises met.

He can throw open the MANY prison doors that hold you captive, and liberate you.

He is the healing balm for the bruised and broken heart.

He can inspire you with new thoughts and ideas, so that your life’s work may be truly original, meaningful and lasting.

He can impart new and wonderful kinds of knowledge, as soon as you really want such knowledge – glorious knowledge – strange things not taught in schools or written in ordinary books.

He can find your true place in life, and put you into it, too.

He can find the right friends for you, kindred spirits who are interested in the same ideas and want the same things that you do.

He can provide you the type of  prosperity that means freedom.  Not as the world knows prosperity.  But the type of prosperity that means true Freedom.  Free to be and to do and to go as God has called you to be and to do.

This Power of God can teach you all things you need to know, if only you are receptive and teachable.

But Jesus said, “You must first repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand”.

So, if your life is lacking the continuous flow of the fruit of the Spirit, the love, the joy, the peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, Now, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is now at hand.

If your life is missing out on the works that Jesus did, and even greater works of teaching and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom which can heal all kinds of sickness and diseases, Jesus says today is the day of your salvation – repent, for the kingdom of heaven is now at hand.

If you are living in loneliness, fear, doubt lack and want, Jesus says today is the day of your salvation – repent, for the kingdom of heaven is now at hand.

If you are and your behaviors are “friendly” with the world but at odds with the Words and Teachings of Jesus, Jesus says today is the day of your salvation – repent for the kingdom of heaven is now at hand.

You know, from the day we are born until the day we die, the 23rd Psalm tells us that we will walk through the valley of the shadow of death in this lifetime. And that God has set at table  before us in the presence of your enemies, and that He has anointed our heads with His Oil and that our cup overflows. And His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. And our dwelling place will be in the house of the Lord, forever.

The day of our salvation is now at hand. You can experience the richness of being saved. You can feast at the table He has set before you, even in the presence of your enemies of lack, want, sickness, poverty disease, loneliness and the like. You no longer need to miss the mark or to be left out of the things He has prepared for your life to Bless you and to prosper your soul.

You are made safe, and rescued from eternal harm. You will have found a rich and fulfilling purpose in and for your life, now. You can be made secure in all your relationships and in all the matters of your life. You can be assured of an eternal life with Him. THIS IS THE TABLE HE HAS SET BEFORE YOU.

For the kingdom of heaven is now at hand!

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT – And What It Can Mean To You

THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT

(And What It Can Mean To You)

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.  And one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him:

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment.” (Matthew 22:34-38)

Jesus was quoting Deuteronomy 6:1-5, “Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may do them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it, so that you, your son, and your grandson will fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. Now Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do them, so that it may go well for you and that you may increase greatly, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

“Hear, Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! And you shall Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

It has been taught and understood by the most of the early disciples and Jesus’ Apostles that becoming a Christian was a serious commitment, in fact a covenant with God, to follow Jesus: You shall Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

We can see from the life of Peter that this was not always an easy task to master, as it will be challenging for anyone who chooses to follow Jesus. But what it was equally clear that the failure to honor your commitment and covenant with God will not end well, as we see in the life and tragic death of Judas Iscariot. Jesus even warns that “it is the one who endures to the end who will be saved”. (Matthew 24:13).

It is not that God seeks vengeance or revenge for those who do not love and honor Him. He does not seek vengeance or revenge. We are born with a rebellious and defiant nature. A rebellious and defiant nature toward God and all of His creation. And it is because of that endemic human nature that all of us are condemned to death. Yes, death, both a physical and spiritual death which leads to an eternity of torment in darkness and fire. You see, it is what we believe in our hearts, in the core of our being, while we are alive that directs our soul and spirit after our natural death. Scriptures cryptically reveals that “if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness”.

In ancient Greek and Jewish culture, the eye was often seen as a window to the soul and a symbol of perception and understanding. The eye was also associated with moral and spiritual insight. In the Hebrew tradition, the “eye” could represent God’s watchfulness and care, as well as human moral and spiritual awareness.

The Greek word “Bad” in the Greek is “ponéros” which is used in the New Testament to describe that which is morally or ethically evil, wicked, or malicious. It often refers to actions, thoughts, or individuals that are contrary to God’s nature and commands. The term can also denote the influence of evil, such as the evil one (Satan) or evil spirits.

In the New Testament, “darkness” is the Greek word “skotos” which primarily refers to physical darkness, the absence of light. However, it is often used metaphorically to describe spiritual or moral darkness, symbolizing ignorance, sin, and separation from God. It contrasts with “phos” (light), representing truth, righteousness, and divine presence.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Greek culture, darkness was often associated with chaos, evil, and the unknown. This symbolism carried into Jewish thought, where darkness was seen as the domain of evil forces and a state of spiritual blindness. The New Testament writers, drawing from this cultural backdrop, used “skotos” to depict the spiritual condition of those who live apart from God’s truth and light.

Why is this relevant to a modern day Christian and why would any of this be important? It is only by changing the focus of your “eyes” from darkness to the Light of God that you can find relief from this threat of eternal darkness to an eternity with and in the Light of God. John 1:4-5 and verse 9, tells us that, “In Jesus is life, and the life is the Light of mankind. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overpower it. His is the true Light that, comes into the world, and enlightens people”.

Furthermore, Loving the LORD God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength, is a visible demonstration of your commitment and covenant with God as a Christian, is not only the Greatest Commandment but it is the Greatest Commitment.

(It might seem that I am wandering off subject here, but it has become an emerging pattern to call oneself a Christian, a follower of Jesus, but on one’s own terms and according to one’s own rebellious interpretation of the Bible. But the Bible tells us that no prophecy of Scriptures is a matter of someone’s own interpretation (2 Peter 1:20). (In the New Testament, “prophéteia” refers to the gift of communicating and enforcing revealed truth. It encompasses both the foretelling of future events and the forthtelling of God’s will, often for the purpose of edification, exhortation, and comfort within the church).

This “emerging pattern”, as I have called it, is nothing more than a remake of ancient paganism. And it is paganism that leads people astray of God and into occultism. (see 1 Corinthians 12:2). And paganism has been on the rise in America and around the world over the last 75 years.

The Church and Christians have become comfortable with their successes of influence, popularity and wealth, so they have slipped into pride and arrogance and a slid into a codified religion of rules, rites and rituals much like the legalism of the Pharisees, scribes and Sadducees of ancient Israel. It created a vacuum and the practices and rituals of paganism is filling that void.

 THE GREATEST COMMITMENT

The antithesis of paganism is to love the LORD God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. It is also the Greatest Commitment a person can make.

Once you have made a commitment, a covenant with God to follow Him, it is eternally binding. Jesus has said to various disciples that following Him and receiving what He has promised comes with a great cost. When one asked if he could go home to bury his dead father, Jesus replied, follow Me and let the dead bury their own dead”. On another occasion Jesus told a follower,No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is worthy of the kingdom of God”.

Dear friends, please read these next words carefully and please do not get caught up in a jumble of denominational doctrinal confusion.

“For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away (renounced the faith), to restore them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. For ground that drinks the rain which often [g]falls on it and produces vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned” (see Hebrews 6:4-8).

REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND

This all comes to intent. I have heard people say that divorce is sometimes acceptable.

Some folks say that sometimes tattoos are okay.

Some say carrying a ‘lucky charm’ for good luck is harmless. I say you are flirting with fire.

Even on these three examples God has been clear. We are to be set apart from the appearances and practices of this world. Although we are in this world, we are not of this world. We are to stand apart from this world and its practices. Our aim should be to excel in the things of the Spirit of God in order to glorify and to magnify God.

If you consider yourself a Christian and are considering divorce, stop now and write me. If you have already divorced, quick, write to me.

If you are considering getting face or body piercings or tattoos, stop now and write to me. If you already have tattoos, write me and let’s talk.

If you depend on horoscopes, astrology, lucky charms or anything of that kind, please stop now and write to me. You are dancing dangerously close to the flames.

Please turn away from the things of this world that lead to death and turn to God through His Son, Jesus and live. Love the LORD God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength, and live!

Your Brother and Friend,

PS:  THE FINER POINTS

(Deuteronomy 6:5) defined and explained, says thus:

The word “Heart” as found in the Hebrew, is “lebab” which primarily refers to the “heart,” not just as a physical organ but as the center of human emotion, thought, will, and moral character. It is often used metaphorically to describe the inner person, encompassing feelings, intellect, and volition. In the Old Testament, “lebab” is frequently associated with one’s inner life, intentions, and spiritual state.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Hebrew culture, the heart was considered the seat of life and the core of one’s being. Unlike modern Western thought, which often separates emotion and intellect, the Hebrew understanding of the heart included both the emotion and intellect. The heart was seen as the source of wisdom, understanding, and moral decision-making. It was believed that God could see into the heart, discerning true intentions and character.

The word “Soul” as found in the Hebrew, is “nephesh which is a multifaceted term that appears frequently in the Old Testament. It is often translated as “soul” or “life,” but its usage extends to denote the essence of a person, their inner being, or life force. It can refer to the physical life of a creature, the emotional and spiritual aspects of a person, or the entirety of a living being. In some contexts, “nephesh” is used to describe desires, appetites, and emotions, reflecting the holistic view of human nature in Hebrew thought.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Hebrew culture, the concept of “nephesh” was integral to understanding human identity and existence. Unlike the Greek dichotomy of body and soul, the Hebrew perspective viewed humans as unified beings. “Nephesh” encapsulated the totality of a person’s life and being, including their physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. This holistic view is evident in the way “nephesh” is used to describe both humans and animals as living beings with breath and vitality.

The word “Strength” as found in the Hebrew is “meod”, which is an adverb used to intensify the meaning of an adjective or verb. It conveys the sense of “very” or “exceedingly,” often used to emphasize the degree or extent of something. In the context of the Hebrew Bible, “meod” is frequently employed to underscore the intensity of emotions, actions, or characteristics.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Hebrew culture, language was often used in a vivid and expressive manner. The use of intensifiers like “meod” reflects a linguistic tradition that values emphasis and clarity. The Hebrew Bible, as a foundational text for Jewish and Christian traditions, uses “meod” to convey the depth of human experience and divine attributes, highlighting the importance of wholehearted devotion and the magnitude of God’s works.

In the New Testament (The Greek language):

Jesus replied, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ (Matthew 22:37).

The word “Heart” in the New Testament Greek is “kardia” which is used metaphorically to refer to the inner self, encompassing the mind, will, emotions, and moral center of a person. It is not limited to the physical organ but represents the core of human identity and spiritual life. The heart is seen as the seat of thought, emotion, and decision-making, reflecting one’s true character and intentions.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Greek culture, the heart was considered the center of physical and spiritual life. This understanding was carried into the Jewish and early Christian contexts, where the heart was seen as the locus of moral and spiritual activity. The heart was believed to be the place where God communicates with humans, and where faith and understanding reside.

The word, “Soul” In the New Testament Greek is “psuché” and is used to denote the immaterial and eternal aspect of a person, often translated as “soul” or “life.” It refers to the essence of a person that encompasses emotions, desires, and the will. It is distinct from the physical body and is often associated with the eternal aspect of human existence. “Psuché” can also refer to the life force that animates the body, as well as the seat of feelings, desires, and affections.

Cultural and Historical Background: In ancient Greek thought, the concept of the soul (psuché) was significant in understanding human nature. The New Testament writers, influenced by both Jewish and Hellenistic thought, used “psuché” to convey the depth of human existence and the importance of the soul in one’s relationship with God.

The word “Mind in The New Testament Greek is “dianoia”, and refers to the mind or intellect, “encompassing the faculties of understanding, reasoning, and thought. It is often used to describe the inner workings of the mind, including intentions, purposes, and the capacity for moral reasoning. In the New Testament, “dianoia” is frequently associated with the transformation and renewal of the mind in the context of spiritual growth and understanding God’s will.

Cultural and Historical Background: In the Greco-Roman world, the concept of the mind was central to philosophical discussions about human nature, ethics, and the pursuit of knowledge. The mind was seen as the seat of rational thought and moral decision-making. In Jewish thought, the mind was also significant, often linked with the heart as the center of one’s being and moral life. The New Testament writers, influenced by both Jewish and Hellenistic thought, emphasized the importance of the mind in understanding and living out the Christian faith.

THE BOOK OF ACTS – Chapter 10, Cornelius’ Vision, Peter in Caesarea, Gentiles Hear The Good News.

THE BOOK OF ACTS – Chapter 10,

Cornelius’ Vision, Peter in Caesarea, Gentiles Hear The Good News.

Once again, I remind us that this is about the ‘Acts of the Apostles’. There are many suppositions and details we could discuss, about the area, the geography, the social and political environs, and the mindsets of these various individuals. If that is your interest, then find a commentary for those matters. But for this study, please read as if you are there, with Jesus and His Apostles. Immerse your mind in the experiences of this journey. Consider yourself actively participating in these events as they take place. Consider this your discipleship training to actually go, and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that Jesus has commanded, in the same way as Luke and the other disciples and Apostles of Jesus.

Cornelius’ Vision

Acts 10:1, Now there was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort, verse 2, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, and made many charitable contributions to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually. Verse 3. About the ninth hour of the day, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, “Cornelius!” Verse 4. And he looked at him intently and became terrified, and said, “What is it, lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and charitable gifts have ascended as a memorial offering before God. Verse 5. Now dispatch some men to Joppa and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter; verse 6, he is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea.” Verse 7. When the angel who spoke to him left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier from his personal attendants, verse 8, and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Verse 9. On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. Verse 10. But he became hungry and wanted to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance; verse 11, and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground, verse 12, and on it were all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the sky. Verse 13. A voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!” Verse 14. But Peter said, “By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean.” Verse 15. Again a voice came to him a second time, “What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.” Verse 16. This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky.

(Commentary Break):  The end of the previous chapter we see God, exercising the miraculous power of raising a woman named Tabitha from the dead through Peter, the Apostle. Next, we drop in on a man named Cornelius, a centurion, who feared God and showed favor to the Jewish people, who is to be used by God to instruct Peter about his mission. The text is self-explanatory.

What I would like to focus on is the process and ask why we do not see this kind of spiritual and direct communication between God and His people nowadays?

THIS IS IMPORTANT

Is it because we are distracted by the cares of this world and our busy day-to-day lives? Matthew 13:22 warns of this, “And the one sown with seed among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful”.

Peter, despite his many faults, seems to be totally and completely focused on the matters of God, and as a result he has the spiritual eyes to see and spiritual ears to hear (Proverbs 20:12).

God is always at work around us and if we desire to be involved in what He is doing, we need to set our minds on the things above and not just on earthly things (Colossians 3:2)

Peter saw with his eyes and heard with his ears, and still had to be told THREE TIMES before he got it and obeyed. How much are we like this? But like Peter, let’s persist until we hear, see and act. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 17. Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen might mean, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius had asked directions to Simon’s house, and they appeared at the gate; verse 18, and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there. Verse 19. While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. Verse 20. But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself.” Verse 21.  Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?” Verse 22. They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well-spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear a message from you.” Verse 23. So he invited them in and gave them lodging.

(Commentary Break): Peter’s vision and instructions were specifically confirmed through his obedience. Today, we can have the Word of God confirmed to us through the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and the church as God reveals Himself, His purposes, and His ways. (See Experiencing God, part 4).

Please, dear friends, let’s remember that calling ourselves Christians and Being a Christian are two very different things. Christians follow Jesus in thoughts, attitudes, speech and behavior. (End Commentary Break).

Peter in Caesarea

Now on the next day he got ready and went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. Verse 24. On the following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. Verse 25. When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell at his feet and worshiped him. Verse 26. But Peter helped him up, saying, “Stand up; I, too, am just a man.” Verse 27. As he talked with him, he entered and found many people assembled. Verse 28. And he said to them, “You yourselves know that it is forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner; and yet God has shown me that I am not to call any person unholy or unclean. Verse 29. That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. So I ask, for what reason did you send for me?”

Verse 30. Cornelius said, “Four days ago to this hour, I was praying in my house during the ninth hour; and behold, a man stood before me in shining clothing, verse 31, and he said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your charitable gifts have been remembered before God. Verse 32. Therefore, send some men to Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called Peter, to come to you; he is staying at the house of Simon the tanner, by the sea.’ Verse 33. So I sent men to you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. Now, then, we are all here present before God to hear everything that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

Gentiles Hear Good News

Verse 34. Opening his mouth, Peter said:

“I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, verse 35, but in every nation the one who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable to Him. Verse 36. The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)— verse 37, you yourselves know the thing that happened throughout Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. Verse 38. You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Verse 39. We are witnesses of all the things that He did, both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross. Verse 40. God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He be revealed, verse 41, not to all the people, but to witnesses who had been chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. Verse 42. And He ordered us to preach to the people, and to testify solemnly that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead. Verse 43. All the prophets testify of Him, that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”

(Commentary Break): “Everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins”.

The Greek verb “pisteuó” primarily means to believe or to have faith. It conveys a sense of trust and reliance upon someone or something. In the New Testament, it is often used to describe the act of believing in Jesus Christ for salvation, trusting in God’s promises, and having faith in the truth of the Gospel. This belief is not merely intellectual assent but involves a deep, personal trust and commitment.

Cultural and Historical Background: In the Greco-Roman world, belief was often associated with trust in the gods or in philosophical truths. However, the New Testament writers redefined “pisteuó” within the context of a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This belief was not just about accepting doctrines but involved a transformative trust that led to a new way of living. The early Christian community emphasized faith as central to salvation, contrasting it with the works-based righteousness prevalent in Jewish and pagan practices of the time.

This Forgiveness of sins is not a casual thing. In the New Testament, “aphesis” (forgiveness) primarily refers to the act of forgiving or the state of being forgiven. It conveys the idea of releasing someone from a debt or obligation, often used in the context of sin. The term emphasizes the liberation and pardon granted by God to sinners through Jesus Christ.

Cultural and Historical Background: In the Greco-Roman world, the concept of “aphesis” was understood in legal and financial contexts, often referring to the cancellation of debts or the release of prisoners. In Jewish tradition, the idea of forgiveness was deeply rooted in the sacrificial system and the Day of Atonement, where sins were symbolically transferred and removed. The New Testament writers, particularly in the context of Jesus’ ministry, expanded this concept to signify spiritual liberation and reconciliation with God. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 44. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. Verse 45. All the Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles. Verse 46. For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter responded, verse 47, “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” Verse 48. And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

(Commentary Break): I would be remiss if I avoided what takes place in verses 44 through 48. I will admit that I can find nothing in the Bible that establishes speaking with tongues as a doctrine of the Church. In fact, there are only five mentions and only 10 remarks on Speaking in Tongues in the entire Bible (The Apostle Paul):

  1.  Mark 16:17 – “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;
  2. Acts 2:4 – And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.
  3. Acts 2:11 – Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty deeds of God.”
  4. Acts 10:46 – For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter responded,
  5. Acts 19:6 – And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.

One Teaching and Examples about Tongues as a Spiritual Gift

  1. 1 Corinthians 12:10 – and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
    1. 1 Corinthians 12:28 – And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, and various kinds of tongues.
    2. 1 Corinthians 12:30 – All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
    3. 1 Corinthians 13:1 – If I speak with the tongues of mankind and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
    4. 1 Corinthians 13:8 – Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away with; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away with.
    5. 1 Corinthians 14:5 – Now I wish that you all spoke in tongues, but rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification.
    6. 1 Corinthians 14:6 – But now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophecy, or of teaching?

And the Apostle Paul completes his teaching with both strong admonitions and encouragements. But speaking in tongues has become one of the most divisive practices in the church because of abuse. Let’s heed the words of Paul and do all things in a decent and orderly manner, not to bring attention to ourselves or our abilities, but only in ways that glorify God. (End Commentary Break).

(End Chapter 10).

We are being set free, liberated and pardoned. And not just pardoned,  but your record of past misdeeds and sins, with God, is expunged. You are made a new person with a new identity. You only need to live it out as the freed person you will have become.

A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS – “Friend, Do What You Came To Do”, Part 59

THE PROPHETIC WORDS OF JESUS

Creative, Causative, Prophetic, Instructional – Part 59

“Do what you came to do.”

While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.”

Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.

The Words of Jesus, Matthew 26:47-56.

This is event reveals several things about Jesus, His disciples and His detractors; things we must know, understand and follow.

#1. Although Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, publicly betrays Him, Jesus still calls him ‘Friend”.

In relation to retaliation, Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:38, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ Verse 39. But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. Verse 40. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. Verse 41. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Verse 42. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you”.

Love Your Enemies

Verse 43. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ Verse 44. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, Verse 45, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Verse 46. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? Verse 47. And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Verse 48. You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

#2. Jesus rebukes Peter for violently attacking the enemy of Jesus, reminding Peter that violence or murder is not the way of the faithful, and that His mission must be completed, and the scriptures must be fulfilled.

#3. Jesus has willingly submitted to the authorities, even though the charges are contrived, false, unjust, and without merit, so that the scriptures might be fulfilled.

These are powerful examples of Jesus teachings of “the Way, the Truth and the Life”. This is how the enemy is ultimately subdued, defeated and some are converted. These are the methods we are to follow as His disciples.

There is only one way to God the Father and only one way to be saved and to live eternally in the Kingdom of Heaven – only One way.

We can say everything ‘just right’ by memorizing and quoting scriptures. But our actions, our behavior, reveals what we truly believe.

It is one thing to believe IN Jesus – and quite another to BELIEVE Him.

This is ‘the rub’, so to speak. The litmus test. One day He will declare to you, either, “Well done good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Master”, or He will say to you, “Why do you call me Lord and do not what I command? Depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!”

(Please don’t misunderstand. We, ‘the called of Christ’, are not ‘doormats’, but we are His ‘doormen’ – leading others to The Door. There are times when we must forcefully speak the truth, speak out against evil and evildoers. Times when we are called upon to resist the enemy and to pull down strongholds of darkness. And it is incumbent upon us to know the difference.)

The day is drawing near. Remain vigilant, active and faithful. Pray for one another until that day arrives.

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

(Concealed Name) BAPTIST CHURCH – (Concealed city), FL

Plan, Purpose, Methods and Ways

(Concealed Church Name)

(Concealed City Name)

Engage, Evangelize, Edify, Equip, and Encourage

Introduce, inform, instruct, inspire, ignite

(Reaching the Lost and Making Disciples for Jesus)

Family, Individual and Youth Discipleship and Development

Objectives: Reach the lost and gather the straying sheep, build up the Body of Christ, His Church.

We are to be built up into the priesthood of believers, commissioned and sent as missionaries and ambassadors of Christ, to

(# 1), the lost, and,

(# 2), the straying sheep of God, and

(# 3), for the building up of the Body of Christ.

(In other words, we need to tell and show the lost and remind the straying sheep of God, the Gospel message in word, by our behavior and deed. Then, to make disciples, teaching and training them to also become missionaries (disciple-makers) for Christ. By this we establish the Church (Ekklesia, the called out ones) within our Church Body.

Jesus taught that “Foxes have holes and Birds of the Air have nests”. He is saying that we are to go out and make disciples. We are not to retreat to the comfort and safety of our ‘fox dens’ or our ‘feathered nests’. He never advocated a stationary and static church, i.e., a “legacy type of church”.

We should be careful to not prematurely integrate people into a static church (a legacy type of church). We should allow people to naturally gravitate into God’s fellowship of believers, but, while that occurs, we must provide fertile soil which comes from the mission Jesus gave the Church, the gamelan of ministry and the cycle of discipleship, i.e., the way Jesus taught and demonstrated.

Everything we do should point to making individuals, families (fathers, mothers and children) integral  participants in Jesus’ Mission, in our local Body.

We must change what ‘coming to church’ or ‘attend church’ means. We come to Church in order to GO OUT from the Church to reach our community and world, and that is how we are to GROW!

To accomplish this, we probably need to consider reviewing or changing our attitude and paradigm of “coming to church”.

First of all, research shows that people come to church for specific reasons. And becoming an audience or an adherent is not on the list. But, they will leave if thier initial expectations are not met.

Here are the top 10 reasons given by Americans who attend religious services at least once a month, according to Pew. Survey. (For you information, respondents were allowed to give more than one reason.) The percentage refers to people who said this was a “very important” reason for their decision:

  1. To become closer to God. (81%)
  2. So their children will have a moral foundation. (69%)
  3. To become a better person. (68%)
  4. For comfort in times of trouble or sorrow. (66%)
  5. They find the sermons valuable. (59%)
  6. To be part of a faith community. (57%)
  7. To continue their family’s religious traditions. (37%)
  8. They feel a necessary obligation to go. (31%)
  9. To meet new people or socialize. (19%)
  10. Because the pastor knows my name. (added by author.)

People need to come to church to meet Jesus; to learn about Him, to come to know Him personally and intimately by the Word of God, and by our living example; they need to  learn how to follow Him – which is both taught and caught, and learn to become fully devoted followers of Jesus. Then, they and we, together, GO and live out our relationship with Him let that be our witness! Go and order to Grow!

(for the full ariticle see Please Don’t Leave).

We need to understand the demographics and discover ways to become more visible and find UNIQUE ways to serve the community – and that boils down to being like Jesus and doing what He did and taught.

GO OUT with activities: Churches tend to hold ‘events’ in order to attract people to Church. So, we invite people to Chruch on a holiday or a speical occasion, maybe once very few months, hoping we will attract some to come back. But unless there is something to keep them coming back, (about 25% will come back a second time if everything goes just right), it’s a one-and-done matter.

It is God who draws people and saves them. We are simply His Hands, Feet and Voice. We go in His Name. But,

#1. We need “Meet them where they live”. We take the Church to them. It can no longer be “Come Grow With Us”. It has to be “Let’s GO and Grow in Christ Together”. Find ways to keep them coming back, every week.

Many church growth programs actually pander to the community, so they attract those ‘already saved’ who are shopping churches. That is, I believe, why baptisms are so low. We aren’t reaching a lost world, we are reaching a saved and straying world!

We can continue to do what is working. PLUS here are some EXAMPLES of IDEAS to go OUT and build:

(1). Build a youth soccer program – A uniquely Christian approach – teach and coach joy, to be peacemakers, kind, good, patient, gentle, self-controlled, yet, proficient, competitive, hardworking, reaching for excellence. Imagine the (Concealed Name) Baptist Church Family Youth Soccer Program!

(Just FYI, I have had experience and qualifications as national youth license, 15 + years experience.

Area Demographics known. Here is an examples of another church doing these very things: Shepherds.Org.

(1.a). Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America! Kids love it, Dads and Moms love it and if you try it, you will love it too! It is a perfect FAMILY activity! Build a uniquely Christian approach to this sport and influence our area for Christ!

This is a kid and family magnet. Imagine, the (Concealed Name) Baptist Church Family Pickleball Club!!

(And by the way, I have been a pickleball club director and I am currently rated as an advanced player and coach)

(1b.) Bible Quzzing is another exciting and fun ways to get our kids and teens into memorizing the Bible. This is an exciting activity with a purpose! would be greatly surprized how fun this is and how much the kids love it!

Imagine the (Concealed Name) Baptist Church Quiz Team!! (And by the way, my wife has been a Quizzing coach and organizer when our kids were adolecents and teens).

(1c). Offering public neighborhood and citywide conferences on subjects such as

“Is The End Of The World A Possibiliy?” (Eschatology – End Times),

“Is Peace Possible in this crazy world – And How About Me and My Family?”,

“How Can I Kknow That God Really Exists – And How Does That Change Things for Me?”

Future planning: There is a plethora of other means and a multitude of ideas, but the main thing is that we build continuity into our Family, Teen and Children’s ministry. Something parents and kids will come back for, week after week, and not just a seasonal or occasional ‘one-and-done’ activity which repeats quarterly or annually.

ALL OF THESE THINGS, AND MORE, TO INFLUENCE AND REACH YOUR HOME AREA AND BEYOND FOR CHRIST!

(2) We must intentionally ADOPT our visitors and new members as “being part of our family”, from day ONE.

(a). Greeting our visitors and getting to know our new members in ways that make them feel at home, can be intimidating for our MEMBERS. So, perhaps we should hold classes and teach, help and train our MEMBERS the “HOW TO techniques and methods” on greeting, creating conversations and making our visitors feel at home and part of our Church Family. (Improve our ‘meet and greet the people around you’ only to go back to ‘sitting in our own little groups, staring forward and listening to the sermon after our greetings.)

(3). Coming to church AS A VISITOR can be uncomfortable, and even intimidating for most people. We must remember that our visitors are just that: visiting us. And we only get ONE CHANCE at making a FIRST IMPRESSION, and that it is a 25-70 deal at best. So, we must turn that around and make it about them. We need to let them know how important they are to us and to Jesus. We need to make them feel as if they are at home, and it is as if we are the visitors in their house! We have to change the paradigm.

(4). Perhaps we could form Parent-children mentoring (discipleship) sessions early in the visitation process or “new member’s class” process. For example:  we begin meeting in special orientation sessions as a way to help them  integrate.

(4a). Design short discussion games with parents and kids.

(4b). Separate into parent groups and youth groups.  Teach from selected scriptures. Then, discuss achievements and needed improvement in behaviors, activities, family environments, etc., in light of selected scriptures.

Form and Technique: What is meant is that we must build the next generation by TRULY making disciples. I.e., “we must decrease in our influence so Jesus can increase through us and the others among us”. It means that we must teach, train, encourage and send; THEN we must begin to replace ourselves with THE NEXT GENERATION – on purpose!

We will be building a Family Ministry to young families and youth as  part of the main Body here at (Concealed Name) Baptist Church, yet separate from the routine – think of it as a Missionary Church Plant WITHIN OUR OWN BODY!

Our focus must be on Jesus’ mission, calling, plan, methods and ways. We should minimize our own creativity. We must constantly be on mission, teaching, instructing, training and inspiring fathers, mothers and children to become mature as living examples, teaching, and training in righteousness, so that they, as servants of God are thoroughly equipped for every good work through the Spiritual Gifts God has granted each one for the building up of the Body: (also see Pastor Vern Collins, UMC Boone).

  1. Lead them to Christ; disciple them in His Name, His calling, His mission, His purpose and His ways;
  2. Lead them to become fully involved, inspired, excited, devoted followers of Jesus, and
  3. Teach them to become disciple makers,
  4. Executing Jesus’ mission, His plan, using His method for His purpose.
  5. Then, send them. They, then, ARE the Church. “It is no longer ‘we four, and no more’”.
  6. Encourage and assist them in building His Church (not ‘our church’), and sending His church out (not ‘our church’). WE MUST DECREASE SO HE, JESUS, CAN INCREASE.

NOW THE BOMBSHELL. Plant a Church within our Church, just like Jesus did it.

We begin with those in our Church whom God has gifted to be disciple-makers. God has alredy Gifted and Equipped them. These will become our Church Planters (Family and Youth Ministry planters) within our Church. This will be and EXTENSION of our Body, new and separate, but fitted together with the Body.

God will provide the gifts and talents necessary, not only for our Church Planters but also for these new believers to – FROM DAY ONE – to become capable of leading the way forward!

I am providing an example here, of how new believers become “fitted together with the Body” when establishing a Young Families and Youth Ministry by Planting a church within a Church. (see Boone UMC – Vern Collins link below). My son and his family were living in Boone, NC. Their pastor was a man named Vern Collins.  I met him at my son and daughter-in-law’s house during a soccer related cookout. (My son and family were moving). Instead of leaving after the cookout, Vern stayed and helped them pack their moving van. Vern lives with and in Jesus’ Church body. They are his extended family. I visited their church after they moved and got to know Vern Collins just a little better. The Boone United Methodist church needed to attract and establish (grow) a youth group.

They started by building a group within the Church and ended up planting a new church INSIDE the existing Church and eventually they GREW TOGETHER and ‘co-mingled’. They are still doing that to this day! (Please view the LINK at the bottom of this page).:

We say that we are ambassadors for Christ which is just another way to say that we are missionaries for Christ. We are on mission, planting churches – first within our own Church Body, then OUTSIDE our walls in the future!

We say we are missionaries and ambassadors for Christ. So, let’s be that!

(And as an addition to my resume and experience: I have had decades experience working with youth, both in the church and outside the church).

Mike Young (Pastor/Teacher/Evangelist/Church Planter).

AND YOU SHALL BE MY DISCIPLES

A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS TO GIVE YOU LIFE

CHRISTIAN ETHOS IN ACTION – “IF YOU”…

Statistics show that we, the Church, are losing attendance, losing members, losing credibility, and we are losing the next generation to the world’s ways and beliefs. Some are dropping out from boredom, some from disappointment, others dont’ see the relevance. They are being influenced and trained by liberal and pagan social media outlets.

We have to engage them in Biblically sound and exciting ways. It has to be exciting, relevant, active, life challenging and life changing. It has to be the Gosple as Jesus taught it. People, families and kids want to be involved and not just an idle audience.

God is calling, and if we are willing, this is going to happen. We will be that “light of the world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden”.

Your pastor, brother and friend,

Mike Young

PS:

I would not be coming here to perpetuate a Legacy Church. I am called to do the will of God by following Jesus

By proclaiming and teaching His Message, His Methods and His Ways;

To execute His Plan by adopting and following his Purpose, Using His Methods.

I have no doubt in my mind that God is calling me, has commissioned and sent me to bring His Good News to the humble and afflicted;

That He has is sending me to bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted, and to release the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual captive from their confinement, condemnation and bondage and to set those prisoners free by the will and power of the Gospel of Jesus.

I am here to proclaim the favor of the LORD is to come upon this Church.

I am here to comfort all who mourn, to give them a new hope instead of living in the ashes of the past; I am bringing oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit.

You would become known as oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

We will rebuild the ruins of the postmodern Church, and we will raise up and restore the former ways of Christ Jesus.

We will renew the ruined sanctuary of God, and the memory of the glories our God to this generation and this in this day.

Henceforth, people you haven’t known up until now, will come and will give to you freely, and they will become your laborers in God’s Work here.

You shall be called the priests of the LORD in this place; people will speak of you as the ministers of God.

You will enjoy a new health and new wealth.

Instead of our former embarrassments or shame we will share in a double portion of God’s Spiritual Blessings; And instead of past humiliation we will shout for joy over this new portion from God.

Everlasting joy will be ours – for those who will trust and follow God in all of His plans, purposes, methods and way.

(References are available upon request).

PS: I believe that I have seen what appears to be a reluctance, by a few ‘pastor search committees’, to view my resume and experience favorably,  because of my age. So, I would like to add, (#1), thanks to God, I have the attitude and energy of a much younger man, and,

#2), my religious academic studies and experience have enabled me to preach and teach the Gospel and the Bible with ability using good hermeneutics and proper exegetical skills, and I am able to skillfully use both the Greek and Hebrew languages in teaching and sermon preparations at a Master’s degree level.

(#3), I want to appeal to you, the search committee members, to consider this: “It is not what you know that makes a difference in people’s lives, it is knowing what to do with what you know that makes a difference.” If there was ever a strong point or gift that the Lord has granted me, this is the one.

Additionally, I have had extensive ministerial training and secular training in these matters, years (decades) of practical, effective and successful experience in coming alongside of, ministering to, counseling with and aiding people in making right and Biblical decisions, and how to effectively and successfully apply God’s Word and His Principles to their lives. And, it has made a difference. It makes a difference!

I know how to guide an organization of people, and more specifically, I know God’s plan for His Church, (the children and saints of God), and how to lead and guide.

For the Church, my calling and passion is to Inform the Church (which IS God’s people), to Inspire God’s people, (The Church) and to Ignite God’s people (The Church).

Inform through Bible-based teaching and preaching, using good hermeneutics and proper exegesis and in a way it is understandable, usable and applicable.

Inspire God’s people by allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us through God’s Word with compromise or apology, and to regularly point out that “nothing is impossible with God”.

Ignite God’s people by helping them see the Gifts He has placed within each of us so we can do the Work of God (and as Jesus said), even greater works, which He has prepared ahead of time for us to “walk in”!

We are most likely at a critical time in eschatological history. There are matters which must be carefully, lovingly yet thoroughly addressed. There are Biblical practices and actions that are being neglected and must be implemented, now. Actions that conform and comply with the direct and specific instructions of Jesus. For Example:

We must “love one another. For by this they will know you are my disciples, by your love for one another”.

“Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. “

“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”

“All of you be harmonious, sympathetic, loving, compassionate, and humble.”

“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves.”

“Go. (all of you). Make disciples, baptizing (new believers) in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to follow all I have taught you, (both by my Words and your behaviors).”

I could go on, but it would take reams of paper. Please believe me when I tell you that I have stored these things in my heart and in my mind. I am ready for action for the kingdom and for your Body of Believers!

(#4), Also, whether as a staff member, interim pastor or in parachurch ministries, there has been always numerical growth in attendance and participation – which, I am certain, comes by lifting the Name and Person of Jesus in conduct, attitude, preaching and teaching of His Word.

Finally, (#5), I want to clearly state that there is no greater joy or satisfaction in my life than to live among Christians, spending time together in fun, fellowship, serving and supporting one another – good times and bad.  I love praising God together, and giving myself to equipping, preparing and sending God’s people on the greatest adventure of our lives.

I want our Church to be, in fact, that Light on a Hill in our community, penetrating as far as our city, county, state and nation.

So, I am asking you (search committees, etc.) to consider these things as you review my qualifications. I am here to present Him and to serve Him and His Church. Thank you.

THE BOOK OF JOHN – CHAPTER 1, part 1 – The Witness of John the Baptist

THE BOOK OF JOHN – CHAPTER 1, part 1

(Verses 1 – 5)

The Witness John the Baptist

Beyond what is stated in the overview of this book, this commentary is meant to seek out the deeper spiritual significance and the application of that significance. Through this study we are to embrace Jesus as the eternal Word and center our life around His teachings; recognize Jesus as the Creator and honor Him; allow the light of Christ to illuminate areas of darkness in our life, leading to the transformation of our minds, proving that which is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God.

Prayerfully, our meditation on and study of this book will aid us in a transformation of our mind and our life which will be reflective of and the embodiment of Christ’s love and humility in our interactions with others; we will become a witness like John the Baptist, sharing the truth of Jesus with those around us, living in the grace and truth of Jesus, and extending that same grace to others while standing firm in His truth.

John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

(Commentary Break): How is it possible that John can authoritatively speak the words found in John 1:1? How can he possibly know this to be true?

It is because the divine Word comes from the inner being of God, as He breathed it out. 2 Timothy 3:16 speaks to the product, and 2 Peter 1:21 speaks to the process.

“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” A more exact rendering of the Greek form of the second clause would be, “but by the Holy Spirit being carried or led, men spoke from God.” In other words, the Holy Spirit was the divine Agent who carried or led or conducted the authors of Scripture so that what they were writing was God-breathed Scripture.

Secondly, Genesis 1 also tells us that it is the work of God, speaking of Himself in the plural, caused all things to come into existence.

Without going into linguistic details, John 1:1 makes one of the most astounding statements about God found in the Bible. The pre-existent God joined to His Creative Word, proclaiming the mystery of His deity. Thoughts that cause us to stand amazed, but too high for our own understanding. Such is the Almighty God. Our God. Omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnipresent (everywhere present). The attributes of God’s supreme nature and His complete control over creation, knowledge of all things, and presence in every location. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 2. He was in the beginning with God. Verse 3. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

(Commentary Break): Again we are told that The Word was, in the beginning, with God (written in the aorist tense, which is without regard for linear time – the past, present and future are considered as one, continuous). Furthermore, He, The Word, created all things, past, present and future. Never be confused or deceived into thinking that science can explain these things, or that evolution is the creator. That leads only to confusion and despair. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 4. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind. Verse 5. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.

(Commentary Break): We know from Genesis 2:7, that “The LORD God formed the man of the dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living person”. These words from the Hebrew language read as such (scripture in red, a literal translation is purple):

Then the LORD Jehovah, the Self-Existent, Eternal God, formed, fashion, and framed, as maker and potter, with purpose, through the squeezing into shape the man, a ruddy a human being, into an individual or the species, mankind, a hypocrite, a common sort, a low man, of mean and of low degree, a person, of dust, ashes, earth, mortar, powder and rubbish from the ground soil, from its general redness, as husbandry-land, and breathed breath, giving up part of Himself, causing Himself to lose life, as seething, and snuffing into nostrils, and the face, by rapid breathing, in passion, ire, and anger, the breath, by an angry puff of vital breath, of divine inspiration and intellect, blasts of breaths of inspiration, soul and spirit, of life, hence, raw flesh came alive, with the appetites of a wild beast, lively; and the man, ruddy a human being, an individual of the species, mankind, became a breathing creature a living person, alive, living, hence, raw flesh.”

Recap of what we see:

      1. God, has always existed and He is eternal.
      2. He is the creator of life.
      3. He creates with purpose and on purpose.
      4. This creation has all the imagery of childbirth: ruddy, squeezed, passionate, violent, painful, raw and costly.
      5. A being of passion with a wild nature and base appetites is created. Mankind is created with flaws, destined to fail, condemned to death and separation from God.

(also see “Then Came Mankind”). (End Commentary Break).

John the Baptist is one of the most significant and well-known figures in the Bible. While John was known as “the Baptist,” he was in fact the first prophet called by God since Malachi, some 400 years earlier. John’s coming was foretold over 700 years previously by another prophet: “A voice of one calling: ‘In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken'” (Isaiah 40:3–5). This passage illustrates God’s master plan in action, as God selected John to be His special ambassador to proclaim His own coming. (from GotQuestions.Org).

John spells out the profound meaning of what Jesus had said and done. John’s book tells of the Eternal Word, Who became flesh and dwelt with humanity. The Gospel of John clearly spells out the basics of the Christian faith. Jesus proves who he is, diagnoses humanity’s problems, and bluntly describes what is necessary for conversion to everlasting life. (In a colloquial way of saying it, Jesus is saying, “Hey, everyone, listen to Me. The end of all things is coming. God the Father is coming to reclaim His land and His children, and then He will destroy this heaven and this earth and everything and everyone in them. He has sent me to save you. I know the way out of this mess you’ve gotten yourself into. Follow Me and be saved!” And if you follow this thread of the truth, you and I have also been called and sent to spread this Word, as His disciples – in the steps of Jesus and John the Baptist.)

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

NEXT: THE BOOK OF JOHN, Chapter 1, part 2 – The Testimony of John the Baptist,

(Please bookmark this page or subscribe for future episodes).

JUST WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

JUST WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

Please stop and think on that. Of course, if you are in even moderately good physical and mental health, you might say, “Well, my name is such-and-such, the son or daughter of so-and-so”. But that would be a bit of a short view, an abbreviation, would it not?

I am not asking where did you come from or what do you do or what have you become, although those things could be helpful when deciding “Just who are you”.

There are approximately 8.2 billion people on this earth as I write this, and each with their own identity. You and I are just one of those 8 billion people. So, among all of those people, just who do you think you are? What identifies you as being the “you” you are?

Too “Existential” you might say? “Not at all”, I say.

Consider this: What if we think in terms of the chemical elements present, or by molecular structure or cell types? After all, your body is composed of about 17 trillion cells.

As interesting (and confusing) as that can be, the answer is no again. This just describes what you are made up of.

The Bible tells us that, when asked the same question, God says, “I AM WHO I AM”.

GOD is saying that He IS Self-existent. That is WHO HE IS.

“When used as a stand-alone description, I AM is the ultimate statement of self-sufficiency, self-existence, and immediate presence. God’s existence is not contingent upon anyone else. His plans are not contingent upon any circumstances. He promises that He will be what He will be; that is, He will be the eternally constant God. He stands, ever-present and unchangeable, completely sufficient in Himself to do what He wills to do and to accomplish what He wills to accomplish.” (GotQuestions.org) However, we, as a natural-born human being, cannot say these things, UNLESS…

Unless we might consider WHO we are in Christ Jesus, THEN…

According to 2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” There are two Greek words which are translated “new” in the Bible. The first, ‘neos’, refers to something that has just been made, but there are already many others in existence just like it. The word translated “new” in this verse is the word ‘kainos’, which means “something just made which is unlike anything else in existence.” In Christ, we are made an entirely new creation, just as God created the heavens and the earth originally—He made them out of nothing, and so He does with us. He does not merely clean up our old selves; He makes an entirely new self. When we are in Christ, we are “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4 KJV). God Himself, in the person of His Holy Spirit, takes up residence in our hearts. We are in Christ and He is in us.

In Christ, we are regenerated, renewed, and born again, and this new creation is spiritually minded, whereas the old nature is carnally minded. The new nature fellowships with God, obeys His will, and is devoted to His service. These are actions the old nature is incapable of doing or even desiring to do. The old nature is dead to the things of the Spirit and cannot revive itself. It is “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1) and can only be made alive by a supernatural awakening, which happens when we come to Christ and are indwelt by Him. Christ gives us a completely new and holy nature and an incorruptible life. Our old life, previously dead to God because of sin, is buried, and we are raised “to walk in newness of life” with Him (Romans 6:4).

If we belong to Christ, we are united to Him and no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6:5-6); we are made alive with Him (Ephesians 2:5); we are conformed to His image (Romans 8:29); we are free from condemnation and walking not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1); and we are part of the body of Christ with other believers (Romans 12:5). The believer now possesses a new heart (Ezekiel 11:19) and has been blessed “with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 1:3).

We might wonder why we so often do not live in the manner described, even though we have given our lives to Christ and are sure of our salvation. This is because we do not know, or we do not honestly acknowledge WHO WE ARE in Christ.

We can rightly say that our new natures are residing in our old fleshly bodies, and these two are at war with one another. The old nature is dead, but the new nature still has to battle the old “tent” in which it dwells. Evil and sin are still present, but the believer now sees them in a new perspective and they no longer control him as they once did. In Christ, we can now choose to resist sin, whereas the old nature could not. Now we have the choice to either feed the new nature through the Word, prayer, and obedience, or to feed the flesh by neglecting those things.

When we are in Christ, and He is abides in us, “we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us” (Romans 8:37) and can rejoice in our Savior, who makes all things possible (Philippians 4:13). In Christ, we are loved, forgiven, and secure. In Christ, we are adopted, justified, redeemed, reconciled, and chosen. In Christ, we are victorious, filled with joy and peace, and granted true meaning in life. It is ONLY then (and now) that I can boldly say, “I AM WHO I AM – IN CHRIST JESUS!”

A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS – “Remain Here, and Watch With Me”, Part 58

THE PROPHETIC WORDS OF JESUS

Creative, Causative, Prophetic, Instructional – Part 58

“Remain here, and watch with Me”

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

The Words of Jesus, Matthew 26:36-39

Troubled – adémoneó: to be distressed; Usage: feel fear, lack courage, am distressed, troubled; to be distressed, troubled. From a derivative of adeo (to be sated to loathing); to be in distress (of mind); be full of heaviness, be very heavy.

Sorrowful – Strong’s #3076 lypéō; to experience deep, emotional pain (sadness), i.e. severe sorrow (grief); even used of the pain of childbirth (see Genesis 3:16, LXX). See 3077 (lypē).

Additional Insights:

Mark 14:34 reports that Jesus was grieved all around, i.e. Intensely sad — exceeding sorrowful.

Luke 25:44 reports that Jesus was in a struggle; full of anguish and agony; the brand of struggle that emphasizes felt pressure, i.e. experienced in an intensely personal way (used only in Luke 22:44).

(Dear Friends: Please be warned – this is not for the faint of heart.)

If you read commentaries on this passage, generally you will find that although most writers correctly interpret and frame this event, they will dramatize and  speculate on Jesus’ mental, emotional and spiritual states beyond what scriptures actually tell us about Jesus praying and awaiting His appointment with crucifixion and death. (For just two examples, see The Enduring Word by David Guzik; and/or Biblehub.com Ellicot and Pulpit Commentary).

As entertaining (and horrifying) as this type of speculation is, it misses three vitally important points:

(1) We should be humbled as we are allowed to see the naked humanity of God the Son (Jesus); and by this we are put on notice that our time is also coming;

(2) Jesus teaches us (see Matthew 5:3) that only by being made ‘poor in spirit’, (that is by being crushed spiritually, and being violated in our mind, will and emotions, to the point of death), are we fit and prepared to ‘inherit the Kingdom of Heaven;

(3) This is the example being set before us for our coming test. The test that we also must endure as His disciples. (Seen first in Matthew 4:1-11, as Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil – we see the example of the testing we too must endure). In these passages we see that as Jesus is preparing to endure the cross – we, too, must ‘deny ourselves’ and ‘crucify our flesh with its passions and desires’ and follow Jesus in this example.

(Please note, that although we are required to follow in His example, we are never ‘made godlike’. He alone is God the Son, and He alone is the Son of God; He alone is the ‘great miracle worker; and, He is the only Savior of the world.)

The greatest point made here is that Jesus endures the strain, the suffering and the humiliation of death of a criminal’s cross, so you and I can be made whole, made safe and healed in mind, body, soul and spirit. But do not doubt that you and I must endure a similar fate if we are to follow Jesus and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Also read “How Can I Get Into Heaven” and, or “Going to Hell Is Easier Than You Think”.

It is our task to do as Jesus has done, and to go a little farther, fall on our face and pray, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.

Please come along with me as we work our way through these events and see the glorious outcome of our Journey with Christ Jesus.

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

NEXT:  A PROPHETIC WORD FROM JESUS – “Friend, Do What You Came To Do”, Part 59

PREVIOUS:  THE WORDS OF JESUS – What Are You To Do With Them?, “And You Will Fall Away?”, Part 59

HEY, CHRISTIANS – What Are We Doing, Anyway?

HEY, CHRISTIANS –

WHAT ARE WE DOING, ANYWAY?

Let’s please, ask ourselves: Are we doing WHAT Jesus told us to do and to be? HOW is it that we are doing WHAT Jesus told us to do and to be? WHEN are we doing WHAT Jesus told us to do and to be?

Let’s start with Church. Why do you go to Church?

What are you learning in Church, and WHAT are you doing with what you have learned?

Jesus has told us WHO we are to be, HOW we are to be. He completed His earthly ministry by telling us WHAT to do. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

So, please ask yourself, how exactly are you fulfilling the Great Commission? Jesus specifically told His disciples, then and now, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

When is the Church – you and me – going to do exactly what Jesus has taught and demonstrated for us to do – the way He demonstrated it?

What am I saying? Please, read and consider these MAIN THINGS Jesus demonstrated and taught:

(1). Jesus came to save the lost. (Luke 19:10, Matthew 18:11).

(1a). Jesus sent “The Saved” to reach the lost. (Matthew 28:16-20).

(1b). Jesus showed the way to send “The saved” to reach the lost. (Matthew 4:17-25)

(2). Jesus set the example for how the saved are to think. (Philippians 2:5, Matthew 9:36).

(2a). Jesus showed how we, the saved, are to think and to live. (Matthew 5:1 – Matthew 10:42. Matthew 22:36-40).

(3). Jesus set the example for how the saved are to live. (Matthew 5:1-Matthew 7:28).

(4). Jesus sent “The Saved” to reach the lost and to tell and teach the Good News of Jesus, and to tell the lost how to be saved.

(5). Jesus sent “The already Saved” to show “The Newly Saved” how to think like Jesus and to think by our example.

(5a). Jesus sent The already Saved” to show “The Newly Saved” how to think like Jesus and to think by their example.

(6). Jesus sent “The already Saved”  to show “The Newly Saved” to imitate Christ. (imitate Jesus).

(7). Jesus warns “The already Saved”, The “Newly Saved” and others of the coming Judgment. (Matthew 24 – Matthew 25).

(7a). Jesus warns “The already Saved” and “The Newly Saved” to get ready and to stay ready, by doing what He teaches and commands in preparation for the coming judgment and rapture. (Matthew 24 – Matthew 25).

(7b). Jesus sent “The already Saved” to show “The Newly Saved” to get ready and to stay ready, by doing what He teaches and commands in preparation for the coming judgment and rapture. (Matthew 28:16-20).

These are the Main Things of His Great Commission. Anything and everything else Jesus has done or will do before the Judgment comes, He will do through us – “The Saved”. He has prepared these works ahead of time, that we might walk in them (see Ephesians 2:10).

And, HOW are we to accomplish these Main Things? (You might say or think, “I’m not a missionary, a preacher or an evangelist. So I can’t do all these main things”. But I would say, “Oh, but you are a missionary, a preacher and an evangelist – of sorts”. God has gifted you with Spiritual Gifts, so that you can effectively participate in the Great Commission, and you must.

Here is a list of the Gifts which God gives His Body, i.e., “The Saved”, equipping them to be able to do the Main Things that Jesus taught and demonstrated.

You see, it would seem that we have come to think that these Spiritual Gifts are exclusively self-serving. But they are not. “God gave some the Gift as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ”.

In addition to the Gifts of the Spirit, we receive and exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (see Galatians 5:22-23).

These are the things that say,“we are a pleasing fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing“. (see 2 Corinthians 2:15). These are the things that lift the Name of Jesus in and through our lives.

(See if you can find which gift or gifts He has given to you – and, please remember, they are His gifts given to you for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry and for His use of building up the Body of Christ, The Church. You are among “the called” and “the sent”.)

Again, please remember, these supernatural graces are given to individual Christians by the Holy Spirit with the purpose of building up the Body of Christ which is The Church and are needed to fulfill the mission of the Church. Spiritual Gifts enable Christians to serve the Lord and His Church. (They are not for our personal entertainment, no matter how beneficial we think our own ideas for these gifts might be.)

These are the Main Things. But it seems that most of the Church of the 21st century, are making other things their main things.

So, WHAT, WHY, HOW, and WHEN are we to do these Main Things?

Jesus did tell us that “of the many that are called, few are chosen”. And that the seeds of the Gospel are spread far and wide, but some fall on rocky soil and spring up, but the sun comes out and they wither away. Some fall on thorns and the thorns choke them out. But some fall on rich good soil, and they yield a crop, some a hundred some sixty and some thirty-fold.

A good example of this is to consider that great crowds followed Jesus, some out of curiosity, some out of desperation. But when the responsibility to follow Him became difficult, the crowds disappeared and the numbers diminished.

When Jesus crossed the sea, only His disciples were with Him, and they saw Him walking on the turbulent waters at night. The disciples were terrified and clung to the boat. But Peter left the safety of the boat to follow Jesus. He was the only one.

So, as the crowds of curiosity seekers begin to go away, you be ONE OF THE FEW; you be the GOOD SOIL; You be the ONE TO GET OUT OF THE BOAT. Go, and follow Him.

God has made a way for those who are willing to GO. Hence,

Many are called.

The lost will hear His Voice

The lost receive the Word and are saved.

The lost become devoted followers of Jesus.

The few will Go and Make Disciples, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that Jesus has commanded – Just like the 11 disciples followed Jesus and many more have followed them until someone told you about Jesus. Now it is your turn, to Go, to show, and to tell others.

Let’s pray for one another as we witness to the world around us through the Spiritual Gifts and the Spiritual Fruit He has put within each of us.

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young.

THE BOOK OF ACTS – Chapter 9, The Conversion of Saul, Paul Preaches Christ, Peter’s Ministry

THE BOOK OF ACTS – Chapter 9,

The Conversion of Saul, Paul Preaches Christ, Peter’s Ministry

If you should encounter circumstances that seem to spell a calamitous or catastrophic end to your current way of life, consider that God may be putting the old ways to death and is birthing something new and purposeful, perhaps even magnificent, in His service.

The Conversion of Saul

Acts 9:1, Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, verse 2, and asked for letters from him to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them in shackles to Jerusalem. Verse 3. Now as he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; verse 4, and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” Verse 5. And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, verse 6, but get up and enter the city, and it will be told to you what you must do.”

(Commentary Break): The contrast of Saul’s attitude and behavior in verses one and two compared to verse five is stunning. Imagine in your mind’s eye, see Saul exhibit his power over others while “breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord”. Then he is suddenly and instantly subdued. He is knocked to the ground by a sudden flash of light from heaven and cries out “Who are You, Lord?” Not knowing to Whom he is speaking, Saul calls Him “Lord”, (‘kurios’, from the Greek language, meaning supremacy or authority, denoting someone who possesses authority, control and power). Saul immediately recognizes that he is overpowered and rendered helpless by an ‘Ultimate Authority’. “Who are You, Lord, indeed. Oh, that each of us could recognize the Authority of Jesus before we, too, must be subdued. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 7. The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Verse 8. Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus. Verse 9. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

(Commentary Break): The scriptures find it necessary to point out that Saul was blind and neither ate nor drank for three days. Numbers in Biblical times often held symbolic significance. The number three is frequently associated with completeness and divine perfection. In this case, it would appear that Saul was isolated in the dark, fasting food and water, alone with the thoughts of this experience. God was at work in the heart and mind of Saul.

How often do we find ourselves “alone in the dark” due to the life circumstances that overwhelm and subdue us. Our emotions so shaken that we resist eating or drinking for days? How often, when found in life’s worst circumstances, do we complain, worry and doubt rather than considering that the Hand of God is working to complete His divine perfection in our life? (End Commentary Break).

Verse 10. Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” Verse 11. And the Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, verse 12, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.”

(Commentary Break): “A street called Straight”? I have often wondered about the ‘coincidence’ of this so-called ‘Straight street’ and the need to ‘straighten Saul out’. But that is an incorrect view and the name of this street is no coincidence.

This name, ‘Straight’, is used here in the New Testament Greek to convey a sense of immediacy or urgency. It often describes actions that occur without delay, emphasizing promptness and directness. This term is frequently used in the Gospel of Mark, highlighting the swift and decisive actions of Jesus and His disciples.

In the Greco-Roman world, the concept of immediacy was often associated with efficiency and decisiveness, qualities valued in leaders and individuals of authority. The use of this word in the New Testament reflects the urgency and importance of Jesus’ mission and the response it demands from His followers. The term underscores the dynamic and active nature of Jesus’ ministry, contrasting with the often slow and deliberate processes of religious and societal norms.

In other words, God is always working, and in this case, He is doing an urgent work of great importance, laying the groundwork to reach the entire world with the Good News of Jesus, through Paul. (End Commentary Break).

Verse 13. But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints in Jerusalem; verse 14. and here he has authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.” Verse 15. But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; verse 16, for I will show him how much he must suffer in behalf of My name.” Verse 17. So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Verse 18. And immediately something like fish scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; verse 19, and he took food and was strengthened.

Saul Begins to Preach Christ

Now for several days he was with the disciples who were in Damascus, verse 20, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” Verse 21. All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, “Is this not the one who in Jerusalem destroyed those who called on this name, and had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” Verse 22. But Saul kept increasing in strength and confounding Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that this Jesus is the Christ.

Verse 23. When many days had elapsed, the Jews plotted together to do away with him, verse 24, but their plot became known to Saul. They were also closely watching the gates day and night so that they might put him to death; verse 25, but his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket.

Verse 26. When he came to Jerusalem, he tried repeatedly to associate with the disciples; and yet they were all afraid of him, as they did not believe that he was a disciple. Verse 27. But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles and described to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had talked to him, and how he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus at Damascus. Verse 28. And he was with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. Verse 29. And he was talking and arguing with the Hellenistic Jews; but they were attempting to put him to death. Verse 30. Now when the brothers learned of it, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.

Verse 31. So the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed peace, as it was being built up; and as it continued in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it kept increasing.

Peter’s Ministry

Verse 32. Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he also came down to the saints who lived at Lydda. Verse 33. There he found a man named Aeneas who had been bedridden for eight years, because he was paralyzed. Verse 34. Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your own bed.” Immediately he got up. Verse 35. And all who lived at Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

Verse 36. Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which when translated means Dorcas); this woman was excelling in acts of kindness and charity which she did habitually. Verse 37. But it happened at that time that she became sick and died; and when they had washed her body, they laid it in an upstairs room. Verse 38. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, having heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Do not delay in coming to us.” Verse 39. So Peter got ready and went with them. When he arrived, they brought him into the room upstairs; and all the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing all the tunics and garments that Dorcas used to make while she was with them. Verse 40. But Peter sent them all out and knelt down and prayed, and turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. Verse 41. And he gave her his hand and raised her up; and calling the saints and widows, he presented her alive. Verse 42. It became known all over Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Verse 43. And Peter stayed in Joppa many days with a tanner named Simon.

(Commentary Break): Why, over time, has this power of God dissipated from the life of the Church? I have heard many people, (pastors, Bible teachers, and the like), say that these gifts were meant only for the Apostles and these gifts ceased with the passing of the Apostolic age. The Bible never says such a thing, and is never silent on matters as significant as these. Such statements are just excuses from the imagination of religious men and women. So, again I ask, why, over time, has this power of God dissipated from the life of the Church?

Two things: One, God is not mocked. If anyone of us thinks he or she is something special (if God grants him His special gifts and authorities) when in fact he is nothing special except in his own eyes, he deceives himself. But each one must carefully scrutinize his own work examining his actions, attitudes, and behavior, and then he can have the personal satisfaction and inner joy of doing something commendable without comparing himself to another. For every person will have to bear with patience his own burden of faults and shortcomings for which he alone is responsible.

So, do not be deceived, God is not mocked. He will not allow Himself to be ridiculed, nor treated with contempt nor allow His precepts to be scornfully set aside (nor have His gifts misused for personal gain); for whatever a man sows, this and this only is what he will reap. For the one who sows to his flesh, (his sinful capacity, his worldliness, his disgraceful impulses such as pride or ego) will reap from the flesh ruin and destruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. (see Galatians 6:3-8).

Secondly: Why would anyone think God would trust such authority to just anyone? These gifts were given to the disciples only after they had been tried and tested by the fires of tribulation and persecution, and proven to be faithful with these Gifts granted by God.

The same is true today. Just believing or wishing for these abilities is never enough. Then, when the temptations of the self- preservation, pride, come, (see Matthew 4:1-11), you will be found out and will know whether you can withstand the temptations of the devil and be found faithful. In this, one must be tried so that when you have done the will of God, you may be found able receive what was promised (see Hebrews 10:36). (End Commentary Break).

Dear saints of God, please consider what you have read in this chapter, the ways and means of the disciples and the resultant exponential growth of the early Church. Ask yourself, are we creating disciples in the likeness of Jesus and the Apostles? Or are we creating religious adherents and “church goers? Let’s pray that we are like the former and not the latter.

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young.

CHRISTIAN ETHOS IN ACTION – “You are being saved, if you hold fast to the Word”, 1 Corinthians 15:1-2

CHRISTIAN ETHOS IN ACTION – Now I would remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you unless you believed in vain”. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2.

The phrase if you, as it applies to you (and me) as a disciple of Jesus, appears one hundred twenty-four times in the English Standard Version (ESV) of the New Testament.

First, we will be confronted with various situations and circumstances from the Bible and, we will discover how we are to respond in these examples. Secondly, I have personalized (rephrased) our study verses for you to memorize. By this, we can bring the Gospel to life as we go and defeat sin along our way.

Today we, as Christians, are confronted with questions about how we should deal with matters such as:

Bible Verse – Now I would remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you unless you believed in vain”. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2.

IN CONTEXT

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

Verse 50. I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain”. (1 Corinthians 15:1-7, 50-58)

REPHRASED and personalized to memorize:

I am reminded of the gospel I hear being preached which I have  received, in which I stand, and by which I am being saved, if I hold fast to the word I hear preached”. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2.

The thought that you can stop at “praying that little sinner’s prayer” in order to be saved and that is all that is ever needed to be saved, you should read Matthew 13:18-22:

“Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

You must hear and understand the Word of the Kingdom. You do this by meditating on the Word, day and night. Do not turn to the left nor to the right, so as to be careful to do al that is contained in it. Then you will make your way prosperous and then your will find success. Then you will indeed bear fruit and yield thirtyfold, sixtyfold or a hundredfold”, if you hold fast to the Word.

It is written!

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young.

WOULD THIS MAN BE WELCOMED IN YOUR CHURCH?

Would this man be welcome in your town, city or in your home and more particularly in your church – especially if He said these things:

“There is only one Truth, and I have come to tell you that Only Truth, because I am the Truth!”;

I am not brining peace. Instead, I am bringing a sword to the world;

I will be turning sons against their fathers, daughters against their mothers“.

“If you do not love me more that your mother, father, sons or daughters, you are not worthy of Me”;

“I am Calling you and all the other sinners to righteousness”;.

“I am bringing fire upon the earth and I will be creating a lot of division”;

And, by these things, I will save all in the world who believe in Me”:.

For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.” (And, not-so-coincidentally, this is also the calling of every Christian!)

TO BRING A SWORD

Matthew 10:34, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. Verse 35. For I came to TURN A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; Verse 36 and A PERSON’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.”  (And, not-so-coincidentally, this is also the calling of every Christian!)

TO FULFILL THE LAW

Matthew 5:17, “Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.”  (And, not-so-coincidentally, this is also the calling of every Christian!)

TO CALL SINNERS

Mark 2:17, “And hearing this, Jesus *said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”  (And, not-socoincidentally, this is also the calling of every Christian!)

TO SAVE THE WORLD

John 12:47, If anyone hears My teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.”   In a very real sense…

TO CAST FIRE & BRING DIVISION UPON THE EARTH

Luke 12:49,I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! Verse 50. But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! Verse 51. Do you think that I came to provide peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather to create division;  (And, not-so-coincidentally, this is also the calling of every Christian!)

WHAT HE REALLY MEANT, WAS…

John 14:12,Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I am going to the Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

I have heard so many preachers and bible teachers try to justify or explain away these Words of Jesus because they just cannot fathom the gentle and sweet ‘dashboard Jesus’ saying such things as we find in the verses cited.  These same confused preachers really get tied in a knot over John 14:12.  They will begin their commentary of teaching it with, “what this really means is…”.

Jesus said what He meant and meant exactly what He said.  We need to get over it and get on with it.

CONTEXT

A recent-past president of the United States declared that America is no longer a Christian nation.  Postmodernism is a term used to describe this new paradigm.  Our churches are practicing a new version of the Gospel of Jesus Christ often described by a “3-line motto” which can be seen across the spectrum of churches in America:  “Gather, Grow, Give” or “Love each other, Enjoy Jesus, Share Him with others”, etc.

These mottoes are an attempt to describe the church and its ministry to the watching world or to the ‘church shopping Christian’.  But, if these mottoes or labels are supposed to describe Jesus and His Church, they fail.

Jesus’  purpose in coming to earth was not to teach a social gospel, create a ‘family life center’, to make you a better you or to shake up the existing religious institutions.  Jesus was on a specific Mission from God the Father as is reflected in the foregoing Bible verses.  Jesus confirms that He is on His Father’s mission. in John 5:19,  “Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way.”

With this in mind, can you, in your most vivid imagination, see Jesus announcing “mother’s morning out”, “cookies and campfires for kids”, “fishing with fathers and sons”, “financial workshops”, etc?  You might say “what’s wrong with that?”.  I would respond that there is nothing wrong with these activities, but, they should be seperated from and should never take priority over Jesus’ Mission and our calling to His service and mission. Each and every “mother’s morning out”, “cookies and campfires for kids”, “fishing with fathers and sons”, “financial workshops” should be conformed to the message the Jesus brought to our world!

The Message of Christ is not about our entertainment, our leisure or our careers. It is about how He has influenced and changed our view of these things and how these things have become a visible witness to the presence of God through the life of Jesus in our daily lives!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.”

FACING REALITY

Everything Jesus has done and that He continues to do is IN THE CONTEXT of what God the Father said. But, the world, both Christian and secular worlds seem to have decided that Jesus is exclusively a gentle little lamb.  But, if you make a closer inspection and take an honest look a what the Bible says, you see a different picture:  Jesus is both the Lion of Judah and the Sacrificial Lamb.  He is both careful with His words and brutally honest.  He is both gentle and forceful.

THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE

If you came home and saw your house on fire, knowing your family was inside, what would you do?  Would you politely suggest everyone might want to step outside or would you take immediate action, sparing no effort or words to alert everyone to the immediate danger and move them to safety at any cost?

Likewise, God’s creation is perishing because of lack of knowledge of Him and Jesus is doing what is necessary to save the world.  We may not always understand His words, His methods or His ways, but it would be prudent to observe, listen, think and obey Him.

The world has long held a misconception, a distorted view of God.  We have made Him into a “kinder and gentler” image which we would prefer.

Jesus is setting that record straight in order to save the world from itself.

SO, WHAT ABOUT JESUS BEHAVIORS?

Most who have read this far, should have been shocked by the opening paragraphs of this article, but, that is EXACTLY what Jesus said and did. These are EXACTLY the behaviors of our Savior.  Jesus’ words and behaviors are the perfect balance of love for this world coupled with rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness

His words and actions must be kept in context, lest we misuse them, ourselves.  Read John 3:16 again, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. 17. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.”

Jesus’ words and behaviors are the perfect balance of love for this world coupled with rebuke, correction, and training in righteousness.  This, too, is our calling!

WE ARE IN AN END DAYS WAR

We are locked in the eternal Spiritual struggle.  Millions upon millions of souls are at risk.  We cannot fight and win this battle using our own means, methods and ways.  It is urgent that we return to Jesus, to His methods and His ways.  It is urgent that we have the mind of Christ at all times and in all matters.  Anything less ends in defeat.

If you dispute or dismiss the idea that God’s ways may seem strict harsh or unfair, remember, God sacrificed His own Son for you.  That seems strict, harsh and unfair, but it is what it takes to save a lost and perishing people.

Jesus willingly gave up His own life for this Cause which also seems strict, harsh and unfair.

And, if God did not spare the natural branches (His own Jewish-Hebrew people), how will you stay secure in this Cause without following Him?  Does this also seems strict, harsh and unfair?  Perhaps.  But it is the only way!

WE MUST GET THIS RIGHT

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  We cannot fight this war with conventional earthly method, means or way.  WE MUST GET THIS RIGHT in our minds and do this in real-time!

This is the only way, for as it is written.  This will shake the very foundations of your life, your church and the world!

  • TESTIFY TO THE TRUTH
  • BRING A SWORD
  • FULFILL THE LAW
  • CALL SINNERS TO REPENTANCE
  • SAVE THIS WORLD
  • CAST FIRE & BRING DIVISION UPON THE EARTH
  • WHAT HE REALLY MEANT, WAS Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I am going to the Father.  And whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”  (John 14:12 ).

Time is short.  His return is near.  It is time each of us, individually and collectively, to pick up our cross and really follow Him.  Now!  Today!

PS:  Just in case you were wondering.  The Bible is clear:  I am not talking about us saving ourselves.  No one can earn their way into the Kingdom of Heaven by what they say or do apart from Jesus.  Our salvation and place in heaven is secured solely by God’s Grace and through our faith in Jesus.

How we act, that is, our words and our behaviors are a reflection of our attitude.  And our attitude, our mind set, must be the same as Christ. Philippians 2:5,  exhorts us to “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus”.

Your attitudes and resultant words and behaviors are what will free you or will limit you, and you will overcome because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of your testimony, and that you do not love this life even when faced with death!
