Pulpit Bullies, False Teachers, Apostates, Heretics – The Postmodern Church

The title of this article might suggest that misbehavior and apostasy is a recent malaise of the church.  Apostasy, from the Greek word, “apostasia”, means “a defiance of an established system or authority; a rebellion; an abandonment or breach of faith.” In the first-century world, apostasy was a technical term for political revolt or defection.   Actually, just like in the first century, spiritual apostasy threatens the Body of Christ today.

I have personally experienced pulpit bullies, false teachers, apostates and heretics in our postmodern church.  These same men seem to have started right, but, over time, their ‘true selves’ emerged, and they are the ravenous wolves which scriptures warn about:   Matthew 7:15-23  says, Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?  “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.  “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.  Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.  “So then, you will know them by their fruits.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’

Before I go further, please watch the first 15 minutes of Pastor Trent Casto’s sermon broadcast (Senior pastor of Covenant Naples Church, Naples, Florida) to get additional background and context.  (If you prefer to shorten your viewing time, watch at least from the 4:42 minute mark of this video to the 13:35 minute mark.

The men, (and, now, women), as referred to in Pastor Casto’s sermon, are in pulpits and on TV screens, leading thousands and tens of thousands astray.

Finally, please, familiarize yourself with what the Bible says, since it is the way to life!  I have copied the following text from the website from the website GotQuestions.org as an excellent resource for details on the Biblical qualifications of a pastor.

CHURCH – WDJD?

What Did Jesus Do”

“Around 2,000 years ago, in a far-flung province in the Middle East, a man emerged from the desert with a Message.  His Message would radically alter the course of world events and come to define the lives of billions.”

This man was named Jesus.  His life and story are recorded from the day of His birth.  But, His earthly ministry is said to have begun about 30 years later.

The year was around AD 30.  Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been arrested, so He withdrew into Galilee, left Nazareth where He had been living and moved to Capernaum by the sea, the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken by the prophet Isaiah, might be fulfilled.

From that time Jesus began to preach a message centered around repentance, and the kingdom of heaven being at hand.  About nine months into His ministry, large crowds were showing up to hear what Jesus had to say.

BREAK for an important NOTE:

The word “PREACH” as used in the Bible is vastly different from what we think of a “SERMON” when we hear the same word.  It is important to know the difference.

From Strong’s Bible Concordance, kérussó: to be a herald, proclaim

Original Word: κηρύσσω, Transliteration: kérussó
Phonetic Spelling: (kay-roos’-so)
Definition: to be a herald, proclaim
Usage: I proclaim, herald, preach.

The world used here is a word of formality, gravity and an authority which must be listened to and obeyed; something which has been done, first in the Spiritual to be manifest in the natural.  It is not a general statement nor is it a request.  It is a prophetic command.

The word “sermon” is never found in the Bible. But, here are two contemporary definitions of a sermon:

SERMON = A sermon is an oration or lecture by a preacher. Sermons address a scriptural, theological, or moral topic, usually expounding on a type of belief, law, or behavior within both past and present contexts. Elements of the sermon often include exposition, exhortation, and practical application.Wikipedia

SERMON - a noun - a discourse for the purpose of religious instruction or exhortation, especially one based on a text of Scripture and delivered by a member of the clergy as part of a religious service; any serious speech, discourse, or exhortation, especially on a moral issue; a long, tedious speech.

SYNONYMS FOR sermon, 2, 3 lecture. 3 harangue, tirade.
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/sermon

Jesus did not “sermonize”, He preached with the authority of God, teaching the Truth of the Kingdom of God.

Word was spreading like wildfire about a young, charismatic Jewish carpenter, claiming that he was the Son of God.  That alone was enough to convince the first century Jew to have a look-see. But this man had other credentials that intrigued people to seek him out.

“The miracles he performed were unlike any that had ever been witnessed, and his incomparable wisdom often left the intellectuals of his day speechless. Even his ability to teach complex spiritual truths through parables, a then common-day form of storytelling, had both Jews and Romans alike shaking their heads in amazement.

“The Bible records that people traveled for days to see him – sometimes getting nothing more than a brief glimpse, or a momentary chance to reach out and touch his garment in hopes of being healed.”

THE FIRST SERMON

Jesus first sermon may have been the shortest, yet the most profound of all sermons ever preached.  In Matthew 4:17 we see, “Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  End of sermon.

But, the ramifications of His first “sermon”, when properly understood and acted upon, are utterly world changing.  (go to this link for details) https://whitestone2020.com/2020/12/24/in-the-beginning/

THE SECOND SERMON

What is now called, “the Sermon on the Mount”, was a bit longer that Jesus’ first sermon.  And, it attracted more than just a few curiosity seekers.  Many of them believed Jesus really was the Messiah that the prophets of the Old Testament had promised.  In this crowd were His disciples.

They listened intently while Jesus taught extensively” – for days!  And TEACH, He did.  The scriptures say “Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him, and he opened His mouth and taught them.”  This was no “sermon” as we consider “sermons”.

Jesus was teaching His disciples how to be “saved” and the Process of Sanctification each of them would have to endure in order to follow Him.  Jesus was making disciples.  Jesus was building His Church.

Jesus carried His Gospel Message, with Him, at all times.  He would teach and in open fields, from the bows of boats on lakes and on the sea.  He taught in and during storms, in the marketplace, at community wells, under trees, at bathing pools and anyplace there were people.

THE THIRD SERMON?

The Bible says Jesus “preached”, only SIX times.  But, Jesus preached and taught the Gospel by His actions, everywhere He traveled.

Matthew 14:13, – 21  “But, when Jesus heard John had been beheaded, once again, He withdrew to a desolate place by himself.  And, once again, when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.  He had taken a boat onto a lake this time, and when he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and He had compassion on them and healed their sick.

“Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”  But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”  They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.”  Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.  And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.  And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.”

Jesus had preached the Gospel Message to over five thousand that day.

“SIMPLE CHRISTIANITY”

Simply put, Jesus did not ‘sermonize’ or lecture.  Jesus taught the Truth, lived the Truth and sent His disciples to live the same way.

Jesus set the pattern and method for His Church and For Preaching the Gospel.

Jesus would Say The Words.

Jesus would Show the Wonders.

Jesus would Send the Workers.

Jesus was making disciples.   Jesus was building His Church.

As Jesus was nearing completion of His mission of teaching His disciples, He gave His disciples authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.

Jesus then gave them these instructions:

Matthew 10:7 “Proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’c 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,d cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunicse or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, greet it. 13And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.”  (https://biblehub.com/esv/matthew/10.htm)

SERMONS?

The main difference between Jesus PREACHING the Good News (Gospel) of the Kingdom and the SERMONS we hear today, is that Jesus is teaching and demonstrating HOW TO be saved and sanctified;  HOW TO do the works He did;  HOW TO make disciples and the SERMONS we hear today are just telling us ABOUT what Jesus did while posturing on stage behind a pulpit under the glare of lights, and little more.

Jesus led by example.  We must do the same.  Not the ‘preacher’, but you and me – The Church!

Time is short.  Jesus’ return is upon us.  We, THE CHURCH – you and I –  must get back to our calling and “DWJD“.   (Do What Jesus Does)!

I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH

(You can listen while you read by using the podcast audio, above.  I use page links in lieu of footnotes and references, so, you can pause the audio to follow a link for details and references, then, resume the audio when you are ready)

The pastor, at a recent church service, congratulated the congregation for ranking high among church organizations within their denomination in mission giving.  He also praised them for meeting the financial needs of their local church budget.  “Go ahead and congratulate yourself”.  There was self-applause.  Bragging, of sorts.

Now this pastor says his church would embark on a building program to increase their size, exposure and influence in the community – all for Jesus and the Kingdom, of course.  (I cannot help but suspect it is also for his competitive stature and ranking within this denomination.  I have seen pastors ‘glean out’ those who do not ‘support their vision, methods and ways’ and ‘humbly brag’ about their church’s accomplishments.)

An internet search will quickly show you this is nothing out of the ordinary, though. 179,000,000 hits on Google search show the undying popularity of building more and more church buildings:

AD 1 The Church of Jesus Christ, The Body of Christ, had no buildings, little money and no wealth. The Church was a Movement.

Matthew 16:18, says,And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. verse 19. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” verse 20. Then He gave the disciples strict orders that they were to tell no one that He was the Christ.

Jesus said to make disciples; collect no money except to make your journey.

Although the penalty for becoming a Christian was often death. The Church grew exponentially.

AD 49. The Church expanded into Greece. The Church became a philosophy to many. The Church grew and size and influence.

AD 313.  The Church expanded into Rome and it gained recognition. It grew in power and popularity. It obtained wealth, buildings, property and influence. It became an institution.

AD 380.  The Church expanded into Europe. It was becoming a worldwide phenomenon. It grew in wealth, stature, power and influence. It had become a culture.

AD 1607.  The Church reaches America.

AD 1681.  The Church became corporate. It had became a business and incorporated. It became regulated by the government.

The Corporate Church grew. It needed money to support growth and expansion, which meant the Corporate Church needed more people.

AD 1777.  The state of Virginia granted tax exemption to houses of worship.

AD 1894.  The corporate church was granted tax exemptions by the Federal Government.

AD 1954.  The Federal Government regulated what a church could and could not say in order to retain tax exempt status.

The church continued to grow, and in order to attract more people the Corporate Church lowered its membership and doctrinal standards. More people became ‘members’ and gave more money to support more growth.

The Church corporation is complete with leaders, boards and membership and a business model.

Local churches compete against one another for members (customers). The church is selling itself in “three line slogans”.

The Church members now have choices and have become religious consumers. Church people can shop around for the religious brand and standards that best suits them. (2 Timothy 3)

The Leadership (pastors and preachers) have become CEOs, disciples have become church leaders, growing their 501(c)(3) business models.

Record numbers of pastors quitting because of stress, burnout or are being fired by their congregations (some stats say 1500 – 1700 leave “the ministry” each month).

Church debt in America soars; church foreclosures soar.

AD 1968.  The church ordains homosexuals as clergy.

AD 1972.  The United church of christ ordains homosexual clergy

AD 2010.  The Lutheran church ordains homosexual clergy

AD 2012.  The Presbyterian church ordains homosexual clergy

The Episcopal Church in the United States and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) have also allowed ordination of openly gay and lesbian candidates for ministry for some years.

Internationally, churches that have ordained openly lesbian or gay clergy include the Church of Scotland, the Church of England, the Church in Wales, the Church of Sweden, the Church of Norway, the Church of Denmark, the Church of Iceland, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, the Evangelical Church in Germany, the Methodist Church in Britain, the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, the United Protestant Church in Belgium, the Swiss Reformed Church, the United Protestant Church of France, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Anglican Church in Canada, the Old Catholic Church, the Czechoslovak Hussite Church and the United Church of Christ in Japan.

Millions of people (approximately 52 million) “attend church” in one of the 300,000+ churches in America, at least once a week each month. However, when people were asked the topic of the “sermon” they heard after 24 hours, only about 10 percent could tell you. When asked to cite the most important lesson they received, most just shrugged.

An estimated 1.2 million hours each week (1) are spent in sermon preparations; it takes about another 300,000 hours in delivery of these sermons (2) at a staggering potential cost of over $750 millions dollars nationally, each week (3). Yet, only 5% of those hearing these sermons, remember anything about them after 72 hours.

BUILDING MORE

AD 2021.  The church is losing and has lost influence. The church in 2021 is losing members and adherents. (George Barna research; Pew Research)

AD 2021.  The church is teaching and living a different Gospel than that of the Apostles.

THE ROCK

Matthew 16:18 “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. verse 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”  verse 20. Then He gave the disciples strict orders that they were to tell no one that He was the Christ.”

Look back a few verses and we can see “THIS ROCK” that Jesus speaks of:

Mathew 16:13  “Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”  verse 14And they said,

  • “Some say John the Baptist; and others,
  • Elijah; and stillothers,
  • Jeremiah,or
  • one of the other prophets.” verse 15. He *said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the
  • Christ, the Son of the living God.”

verse 17And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. verse 18.  And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. verse 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

It is important to understand the nuance of the language Jesus uses here.  He calls Peter by name, Pétros in the Greek language, which is an isolated rock or a stone as one would throw.  But, the ROCK upon which Jesus will build His Church is the word “pétra”, which is a huge mass of interconnected rock, a “solid or native rock, rising up through the earth”.

This is important because Jesus is telling you, and all of His followers, about your position, your ability, your responsibility and your authority in His Church:

  • I will build My Church, you and others like you; and
  • the gates of Hades will not overpower you and others like you.
  • I will give you and others like you the keys of the kingdom of heaven;
    • and whatever you and others like youbind on earth shall have been bound in heaven,
    • and whatever youand others like you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”

Finally, Jesus says He will give you and others like you, that is, His Church, the keys to the kingdom of heaven.  We can pursue this as a metaphor, but, there are specific references to these KEYS in the scriptures.

The most significant is The Key of David is a term found in Revelation 3:7 and Isaiah 22:22.

A key indicates control or authority; therefore, having the Key of David would give one control of David’s domain, i.e., Jerusalem, the City of David, and the kingdom of Israel.

The fact that, in Revelation 3:7 Jesus holds this key shows that He is the fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant, the ruler of the New Jerusalem, and the Lord of the kingdom of heaven.

And (you) coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by people, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For this is contained in Scripture:

Behold, I am laying in Zion a choice stone, a precious cornerstone,
And the one who believes in Him will not be ]put to shame.”

This precious value, then, is for you who believe;   (1 Peter 2:4-7)

You and I must take up our appointed positions.  We must shake of the lethargy of the 21st century postmodern religion we call ‘church’ and take the Gospel of Jesus to the streets, the byways, the hedges and towns, into our neighborhoods, and as scriptures tell us, BECOME THE LIVING STONES, A LIVING SACRIFICE.

FOOT & STUDY NOTES:

I “SAY” to you:  3004 légō (originally, “lay down to sleep,” used later of “laying an argument to rest,” i.e. bringing a message to closure; see Curtius, Thayer) – properly, to say (speak), moving to a conclusion (bringing it to closure, “laying it to rest”). Aorist active

You “ARE”:  1510 eimí (the basic Greek verb which expresses being, i.e. “to be“) – am, is. 1510 (eimí), and its counterparts, (properly) convey “straight-forward” being (existence, i.e. without explicit limits).

”PETER”:  “4074 (Pétros) is an isolated rock and 4073 (pétra) is a cliff” (TDNT, 3, 100). “4074 (Pétros) always means a stone . . . such as a man may throw, . . . versus 4073 (pétra), a projecting rock, cliff” (S. Zodhiates, Dict).

Upon this “ROCK”:  4073 pétra (a feminine noun) – “a mass of connected rock,” which is distinct from 4074 (Pétros) which is “a detached stone or boulder” (A-S). 4073 (pétra) is a “solid or native rock, rising up through the earth” (Souter) – a huge mass of rock (a boulder), such as a projecting cliff.

I will build my “CHURCH”:  1577 ekklēsía (from 1537 /ek, “out from and to” and 2564 /kaléō, “to call”) – properly, people called out from the world and to God, the outcome being the Church (the mystical body of Christ) – i.e. the universal (total) body of believers whom God calls out from the world and into His eternal kingdom.

DECEPTION WITHIN THE CHURCH

Signs of Christ’s Return – See to it that no one misleads you!

Matthew 24:1 “Jesus left the temple area and was going on His way [a]when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. 2 But He responded and said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.”

3 And as He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you.  For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will mislead many people.”

Just about anyone would know that only a fraud would go about saying, “I am Jesus.  Follow me“.  But INSTITUTIONAL DECEPTION is harder to spot.  False teachers will use most of the words of the Bible to start a false church and to convince you they are Christian, much like Satan did in the Garden of Eden and during the testing of Jesus, only to mislead you.

These videos will help you begin to understand this sign of the 5th TRIBULATION SEAL

HOW TO DEAL WITH MARXISTS IN THE CHURCH

(You can listen to the audio podcast and read along, then you can pause the audio to follow links on this page for additional details.  When you are ready, you can, then, resume the audio.. Please note that page links are used in lieu of footnotes and references.)

JESUS, THE APOSTLE PAUL, GNOSTICS AND FALSE TEACHERS

There are remarkable and undeniable similarities between the false teachers, Judaizers, Pharisees and the Gnostics of the Apostle Paul’s day and the religious humanists of Socialism, Communism, Marxism, the Ecumenical Globalists and the political Leftists of our day. In fact, one could say that the latter is just a postmodern continuation of the former.

So, we can study Jesus’ and the Apostle Paul’s approach to dealing with the false teachers and “Christ deniers” of their day to see how we should deal with false teachers, false religions and the Marxists of our day.

I have selected pointed and succinct scriptures to inform, teach and guide us. Please take notes, because I have a question for you at the end of this page.

I. Warning Against False Teachers (Paul the Apostle)

1 Timothy 1:3-20, says As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by serving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

“Now we know that rthe law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers,  the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with uthe gospel of the glory of vthe blessed God wwith which I have been entrusted.

Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

“I thank him xwho has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, go whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, iimmortal, invisible, the only God, lbe honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I thave handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.”

Pray for All People

1 Timothy 2:1-15, continues, saying, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and ato come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given fat the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, klifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;

likewise also, that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, rthen Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but sthe woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”

II.    SHEEP, WOLVES, A TREE AND ITS FRUIT (Jesus)

Matthew 7:5 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are avenous wolves. You will recognize them lby their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.”

I Never Knew You

Matthew 7:21, tells us, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

Build Your House on the Rock

Matthew 7 :24-27, continues with, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.  And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Authority of Jesus

Verse 28.  “And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.”

III.   FIERCE WOLVES COMING FROM YOUR OWN PEOPLE (Paul the Apostle)

Acts 20:28-31, cautions us, Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;  and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears.”

IV.    PURGE THE IMMORAL GREEDY, EVIL (The Apostle Paul)

1 Corinthians 5:6-13, instructs us that,  Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?  Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.  But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?  God judges those outside. Purge the evil person from among you.”

V.     Godlessness in the Last Days (The Apostle Paul)

2 Timothy 3:1-5, informs us, But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

RECAP:

 1.  Warn others not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations.

 2.  In accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience.

 3.  Hand those over to Satan who have made shipwreck of their faith, that they may learn not to blaspheme. Name them publicly , such as Hymenaeus and Alexander.

 4.  Make supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for all people,

 5.  Men should be the ones who pray in every place, lifting lholy hands without anger or quarreling;

 6.  Women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

  7.  Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.

 8.  Do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

 9.  Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves

 10. Cut down every tree that does not bear good fruit and throw it into the fire.

 11. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,

 12. Your boasting is not good.

 13. Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened, for Christ. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

 14. Do not to associate with sexually immoral people—not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.

 15. Do not to associate with anyone, do not even to eat with such a one who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler.

 16. Purge the evil person from among you. You are to judge those inside the church. God judges those outside the church.

 17. Avoid people who are lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.

MANY IN THE CHURCH ARE ADRIFT – APOSTASY IN THE CHURCH

These points may counter what you have been hearing in your local church, but, as you can see, they are straight from Jesus, the Apostle Paul and the Bible. These are our instructions for today – our Marching Orders.

Please listen to the video from THE BIBLE PROJECT. It is like reading today’s headlines or from a church bulletin.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME

I was part of a church which decided they could be more successful  if they built a bigger building

A popular movie in 80’s was “Field of Dreams”. Field of Dreams is a 1989 American sports fantasy drama film  The film stars Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster in his final film role.

An Iowa farmer, Ray, (Kevin Costner) hears a mysterious voice one night in his cornfield saying “If you build it, he will come,” he feels the need to act. Despite taunts of lunacy, Ray builds a baseball diamond on his land, supported by his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan). Afterward, the ghosts of great players start emerging from the crops to play ball, led by “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. But, as Ray learns, this field of dreams is about much more than bringing former baseball greats out to play. Field of Dreams is sentimental, but in the best way; it’s a mix of fairy tale, baseball, and family togetherness.

The ‘motto’ later in the film, becomes, “If you build it THEY will come”.  And, sure enough, word gets out and almost magically, lines of cars fill the country roads for miles, as far as they eye can see, making their way to the baseball diamond on this rural farm.

Disneyland may have been an amazingly successful forerunner of a similar idea.  So, perhaps the writer and producer of “Field of Dreams” had Disney’s idea in mind when they made the movie.

It seems that the idea caught on in future years. Entrepreneurs, dreamers and business people alike, have been coming up with their own fantasy-like ideas to promote their dreams, causes or money-making schemes.  Most of these ‘dream builders’, however, have not been so successful.

I was part of a church organization in the recent past, which decided they could be more successful (or, as they would say, “so we can serve the Kingdom of God better) if they built a bigger building on a busy roadway near big neighborhoods.  They didn’t say the exact words, “Build it, and they will come”, but that is exactly what they were saying.  Here are some examples of how they would say what they would say:

  1. “Our church facility is too small, and studies show that more people will come if we had more inside space per person.”
  2. “We are landlocked and can’t expand and grow, and studies show that if we had more parking space, more people would come”.
  3. “People can’t find us so we need more visibility so we can expand and grow.  Studies show that if we are more visible on a heavily traveled road, more people will come”.
  4. “We need more land for future expansion, so we can (yep) expand and grow.  More people would come if they knew we had a plan for the future.”

The difference is that the ghosts of great preachers will not start emerging from any of the nearby crops, like in the movie.

The similarity between the movie and this real life event are that a pastor instead of a farmer heard a mysterious voice saying, “If you build it they will come.” The ideas are sentimental, but in the best way; it’s a mix of hopeful thinking, church growth, and family togetherness.

Do I sound to harsh?  Listen to the reasons they listed and excuses offered for not growing:

  1.  The reason we can’t grow is because of our small building. It’s the fault of our small building.
  2. It’s the fault of our location and lack of parking space.
  3. It’s the fault of lack of visibility.
  4. It’s the fault of our lack of excess land and acreage.

Now, listen to what God says:

  1.  John 12:32 “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to Myself.
  2. Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
  3. 1 Thessalonians 3:9 “Now as to the love of the brothers and sisters, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 for indeed you practice it toward all the brothers and sisters who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers and sisters, to excel even more, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we instructed you, 12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.
  4. Acts 2:37 “Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what are we to do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on urging them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
  5. Acts 2:43 “Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all the believers were together and had all things in common; 45 and they would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need. 46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

(I am a pickleball enthusiast.  I play for fun, but, I am also a student of the game because I want to become better at the game.  I guess I should say, “The better I play, the more fun I have”.

I play ‘doubles pickleball.  That means I play with a partner.  It seem that when my partner plays well, I play better, and vice versa.  Good players always compliment their partner’s good play.

I occasionally have a partner who does not play well.  I know players who don’t practice, they do not study the game, and they do not play well, but, they always blame their partners for their poor play, missed shots and failures in court strategy.  I don’t criticize, but, they are just no fun, so I avoid playing with them when I can.

There is a saying that goes something like this:  “Successful people correct their mistakes and give credit to others; unsuccessful people make excuses and lay blame”.  Be the former, not the latter.)

Maybe I am just too old-fashioned, or perhaps my life experiences have distorted or tainted by view on these matters.  But, after 11 years at this church, and seeing a repeated pattern from other churches, I think I am seeing clearly.

My prayer is that God will come though and fill this, and all the understaffed, small, isolated and cramped churches to overflowing – to the point that they, the Church, builds newer and bigger facilities to accommodate what God has already done!

I have more to say, but, I will just leave you with this audio sermon from Truth For Life, the teaching ministry of Alistair Begg:

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

WHAT ARE YOU GETTING for what you are doing?

You probably already know the perceived condition of America in 2021, as well as the state of the world. Some are saying we are in a state of political and social chaos. New diseases, wars, political intrigue and poverty, to name a few things that are holding our attention and draining our treasury.  Many people are turning to religion, God or the Church for answers.

An estimated 1.2 million hours each week, (#1), are spent in sermon preparations; it takes about another 300,000 hours in delivery of these sermons, (#2), at a staggering potential cost of over $750 millions dollars nationally, each week. (#3,. Yet, only 5% of those hearing these sermons, remember anything about them after 72 hours.

If you are normal, you have the potential of remembering 10% of what you hear, and that is only the potential. Pastor and Bible teacher, Rick Warren, says we forget 95% of what we hear after 72 hours.

So, what are you getting for $750,000,000 in offerings? And, if you are a preacher or a pastor, what are you giving? Are you preaching, sermonizing, teaching, discipling, lecturing, giving a religious address or discourse which improve peoples’s lives or that they can even remember?

Review these methods used by churches, and determine which of these your are getting on Sunday mornings – and decide if it is worth the time and money:

      • Religious Lectures
      • Religious Addresses
      • Religious Discourses
      • Gospel Preaching
      • Bible Sermons
      • Religious Teaching
      • Christian Discipleship training

Studies show that most people don’t remember sermons, lectures, address or speeches—they don’t even remember paragraphs. What people remember are simple statements, slogans, and phrases. I don’t remember any speech John F. Kennedy gave, but most of us of a certain age remember his statements,

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” and, “I am a Berliner!”

I don’t remember any sermon preached by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but I do remember his famous phrase,

“I have a dream!”

People tend to remember:

      • 10% of what they read.
      • 20% of what they only hear.
      • 30% of what they only see.
      • 50% of what they see and hear.
      • 70% of what they say and write down.
      • 90% of what they DO

People will more frequently remember simple repeated statements, slogans, and phrases.

Jesus ministry was modeled on:

  • Jesus personally and actively setting the example for making, teaching and sending disciples. (I can find no example that Jesus wrote anything.)
  • Jesus speaking and teaching and showing His disciples by His own example (50% retention rate).
  • Jesus teaching His disciples to repeat His Words as He went with them to do His Works (90% retention rate).

So, Christian, how about you? How effective is your ministry?

  • Is your church primarily using reading materials to disciple? (10% retention)
  • Is your church primarily giving you sermons to disciple? (20% retention)
  • Are you seeing videos and overhead projections and bulletins with outlines?
  • When was the last time you went out with your pastor and preached, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’  (And, as it says in Matthew 10:8-15), attempted to), “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Verse 9.  Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his support. Verse . And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave that city. Verse 12. As you enter the house, give it your greeting. Verse 13.  If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace. Verse 14.  And whoever does not receive you nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or city, shake the dust off your feet. Verse 15.  Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment, than for that city. ” (90% retention)

And, Preacher / Pastor, how about you? How effective is your ministry?

  • Do you have a blog? (10% retention)
  • Do you give a weekly sermon or lecture? (20% retention)
  • Do you use overheads projectors, videos or bulletin outlines? (50% retention)
  • Do you take others and go and make disciples?  “And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.  Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts,  or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his support. And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave that city.  As you enter the house, give it your greeting.  If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace.  And whoever does not receive you nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or city, shake the dust off your feet.  Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment, than for that city. (90% retention)

The current way of “doing church” seems to be changing monthly.  This has been going on for the last 40 years and it is causing the church to falter in influence and to lose its “savor”, as the Bible puts it.

The church, it seems, is becoming little more than a religious institution delivering “drive-in” or “drive-up fast food style” preaching, sermons, religious lectures, addresses, discourses and entertainment in competition with NFL Sunday, Youtube TV, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Now I have said it and you have read it, will it make any difference or will you just shrug your shoulders and trundle back to “doing your church thing” this Sunday?

Or will you, do like Peter, Andrew, James, Zebedee and John, who dropped everything about the current ways they were living, and followed Jesus, step by step?

The Answer?  Follow the pattern and method established by Jesus. Nothing more, nothing less.

I can hear (because I have heard) people and pastors saying, “But, all the things we are doing are necessary and part of our ministry.”

And I say, “Yes? But, Jesus did not say to do it your way and He did not do it your way. Everything else you might say about Jesus, and those things which flow from Him, may be “Necessary, but they are Secondary”.  Jesus is the MAIN THING! (And, by the way, if you say all the ‘extras’ are necessary, who are you trying to convice?”)

THE UNSEEN WAR

Feeling inspired or convicted from a sermon had become a rare thing for me.  Especially for that conviction or inspiration to last for weeks at a time.  But, to weep from a sermon had become nonexistent, until lately.

I encourage you to listen to the video below, absorb it and then act!

Daniel 10:1 – Daniel 11:1
Pastor Trent Casto, Covenant Church of Naples, FL – PCA                              (Excerpt reprinted, with permission)

“We are engaged in a cosmic spiritual conflict that has been raining for ages, and the events we see playing out in our world are reflections of the unseen war taking place in the heavenly places.”

“We see the effects of this spiritual conflict playing out in the world all around us. Governments are telling churches they cannot meet for worship in person, Christians are telling pastors they will leave the church if they have to wear a mask. Pastors are leaving their churches because of the extraordinary pressure and levels of conflict occurring in this season. Our news and newsfeeds are filled with so much disinformation that few people know who they can really trust, effectively unraveling the very fabric of our society.

“Real racism is a present reality as is real injustice in the halls of power.  Kids are committing suicide at an alarming rate. Depression and anxiety feel like the norm for our teens, rather than the exception. Human trafficking, the pornography industry and legalized abortion have ravaged countless lives. Of course, responsible human agents are involved in all these situations, but Christians must not forget that these are also the effects of the unseen war that is raging.

“Only when we understand the true nature of our conflict in this world can we engage in it appropriately and effectively. The Apostle Paul writes, in Ephesians 6:12…”

What shall we do?

        1. We need a hunger for God
        2. We need a Fresh Vision, Word and Touch form God
        3. We need an Unshakable Confidence in God

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

I pray that ‘the LORD bless you, and keep us;  The LORD make His face shine on us, And be gracious to us;  The LORD lift up His countenance on us,  And give us peace.’

THE BUMMER LAMB

Every once in a while, a ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. There are many reasons she may do this. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once a ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind.

These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken.

These lambs are called “bummer lambs.” Unless the shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the shepherd does?

He takes that rejected little one into his home, hand-feeds it and keep it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to his chest so the bummer can hear his heartbeat. Once the lamb is strong enough, the shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock.

But that sheep never forgets how the shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him. When the shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to him first?
That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows his voice intimately.

It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the one who loves it.

It’s not that it is loved more, it just believes it because it has experienced that love one on one.

So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. Go to almost any church in your area, and you can find scores of these lambs. People show up, shake hands at the appointed time and then leave after an hour or so of religious lectures, entertaining music and announcements – having been alone in a crowd.

The pastor will greet a few with a brief head nod and a smile and then after doing this ‘pastoral public relations duty’ he goes to hang out with his favorite “sheep” away from the flock. The other lambs, inwardly, hang their head and think, “Oh, well. Maybe someday”.

Why should any child of God have to settle for this?

“Prophesy and say to those shepherds, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Woe, shepherds who have been feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock?

“You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fat sheep without feeding the flock.

“Those who are sickly you have not strengthened, the diseased you have not healed, the broken you have not bound up, the scattered you have not brought back, nor have you sought for the lost; but with force and with severity you have dominated them.

“They were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and they became food for every beast of the field and were scattered.

“My flock wandered through all the mountains and on every high hill; My flock was scattered over all the surface of the earth, and there was no one to search or seek for them.”’

“Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: “As I live,” declares the Lord God, “surely because My flock has become a prey, My flock has even become food for all the beasts of the field for lack of a shepherd, and My shepherds did not search for My flock, but rather the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock;

“Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will demand My sheep from them and make them cease from feeding sheep. So th shepherds will not feed themselves anymore, but I will deliver My flock from their mouth, so that they will not be food for them.”’”

I know that Jesus is the good Shepherd and that He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart, so we can hear His heartbeat. I know that the broken are deeply loved by the True Shepherd, but, until that day when we are with Him, those who take on the name of “pastor” have a covenant duty, to care for His Sheep!

May God Bless and strengthen you faithful shepherds who watch over, care for, love and feed His Flock, day after day – caring for even the most needy and least lovely.

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

THE GREAT ASSEMBLY

“Behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues.”

Revelation 7:9

Imagine. A number of people so large that no one could count. The Population Reference Bureau, Washington, DC, estimates that as of the year mid-2022, 117,020,448,575 (read that, one hundred seventeen billion, twenty million, four hundred forty-eight thousand, five hundred seventy-five) people have lived on earth. (Actually, that number is extrapolated with some very sophisticated formulae.)

Now imagine this.  Matthew 7:13 tells us to “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14“For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Those who do not enter through the narrow gate, do not go to heaven, but will perish in the lake of fire – hell.”

QUESTION #1.   So, which is it?

(a) “A great multitude” before the throne of heaven, so large no one could count them? Or,

(b) “A narrow gate” to eternal life and few find it?

The Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life published a new comprehensive demographic report on the size and distribution of the world’s Christian population. The study finds that there are 2,662,979,000 (billion) Christians of all ages in more than 200 countries around the world, according to a report published in early January 2023, by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.

That would mean that only about 2.27% of the world’s entire humanity found the narrow gate! Small, indeed, when compared to the entire population of the earth throughout all time. But, still, 2,662,979,000 is a lot of people.

So, I guess the answer is “BOTH”.

QUESTION #2.   So, where did approximately 2 Billion people come from who “were standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;”? (Revelation 7:9)

Revelation 7: 14 says, “My lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

If that number, that multitude came from the Great Tribulation period alone, that is during the final 7 years (The 70th Week of Daniel) the number would not be so large. But, if it comes from the beginning of time, when “your faith was counted to you as righteousness”, the number could be staggering.

1 Thessalonians 4:15 tells us “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.”

QUESTION #3. Will you be counted in the number of “The Great Multitude” standing before the Throne of the Lamb?

By all accounts, we are witnessing the breaking of the FIFTH SEAL of the tribulation. The return of Christ and the breaking of the SIXTH SEAL marking the beginning of the Great Tribulation, the Great and Terrible Day of the Lord, could occur soon – at any moment.

This is the Christian’s destiny. This is The Christ’s Promise and our Hope.  Having been washed clean of all regret and sin by the sacrificial Blood of Jesus, spending our eternity with Him in heaven.

But, time is short – the exact date is not known. Come to Jesus, now! Do not delay. It’s the best decision you could ever make. Surrender your life to Christ Jesus, now.

QUESTION #4. What’s stopping you? Nothing to lose except sin, misery, aimlessness (and outer darkness where there will be and wailing gnashing of teeth!) and everything to gain!

“I came that you might have life, and life more abundant” – Jesus, John 10:10

PANDERING TO THE CULTURE

(You can listen to this article as you read and pause the audio to follow page links, then, resume the audio when you are ready. Please note that I use page links in lieu of references or footnotes for important details.)

A few years ago I was suffering with middle to lower back pain and an ugly rash over my torso.  After several failed attempts to diagnose and treat my increasing discomfort, my family doctor referred me to a dermatologist, but with no success.

Next, my doctor sent me to an exotic disease specialist.  Complete failure.

All these medical professionals kept saying they could not find a reason for the spreading rash or awful back pain.

Next, I was sent to an urologist.  The urologist was unable to diagnose the problem with blood and urine test so he tried a cat-scan and finally an MRI.  Still in a quandary, he decided to treat me with antibiotics.  First one kind and then another.  No results.

He could see my pain was increasing to the point of becoming debilitating, so he tried yet another and different antibiotic and he increased the dosage.

Finally, after nine months, he gave up.

My wife, an avid reader, suggested, or rather demanded, that I stop all medications.  I was taking a cholesterol medication and a blood pressure pill.  I protested saying I might die!  Whereupon, she insisted that my incessant complaining was going to kill her first!

So I quit my meds.

Within two weeks my rash and all my pain was gone.

We suspected the culprit was the cholesterol medicine.  I told my family physician.  So, he prescribed a different cholesterol medicine.  The pain returned.  So he tried another.  This time both the rash and the pain returned.  He tried another, the pains returned.  Finally, the doctor proclaimed me allergic to cholesterol medicines!

I turned to proper diet, free from ‘bad foods’, regular daily exercise and I have become healthy.

It wasn’t the high cholesterol – it was ‘the cure’ which was killing me.

I guess I shouldn’t blame my doctors.  They were just doing for me what they have done for everyone else.  You could say, in a funny way, they were pandering to my needs.  But, I am not everyone else and the traditional treatments did not work on me.  I needed THE CURE.

WHICH REMINDS ME

We visited a local church fairly recently.  They list themselves as “Non-denominational” but, with prompting, they will admit they are actually Southern Baptists.  We entered their big auditorium and took a seat.  The ‘lead pastor’ arrived with a bottle of Perrier, perched himself upon his ‘preaching stool’ next to an acrylic podium.

He greeted the crowd with a friendly smile and introduction.  But, I missed some of what he said because my attention and thoughts had been drawn to the tattoos down his left arm, his Hawaiian flowered shirt, his worn-looking jeans and his Millennial-style language.   In my era we would have called him a hipster I guess, except that he is 50 years old.

His ‘sermon’ was preceded by a slick video of a house and flower garden.  The subject was “Living a Healthy Life”, which was taken from the book of 1st Corinthians, I think.

He read and quoted scriptures.  But, his perspectives were solidly based on a postmodern worldview.  His appearance and language and message seemed incongruous with the Gospel.

I’ll make this short by saying that after I met some of the prospective members in a new member’s introduction class I formed an opinion.  Everyone in this group said they had been Christians for a number of years.  But, what struck me was how little they knew about what they professed about Christianity.  Most of what they said sounded more like advertising sound bites.

I already knew a few people who have been long-term members of this church.  They are friendly and nice people.  And I know of their lifestyles, practices and habits which also strike me as incongruous with what the Bible and the Gospel teach.

On another occasion, a friend visited a nearby church.  I’ll save you the buildup.  It was almost the same.  But, this time, the pastor was wearing pointy leather shoes, leather pants and a white fluffy shirt with ballooning arm material.  To me, he looked like a pirate who had strayed from his ship.

I think the music damaged his hearing and the strobe lights partially, although temporarily, blinded him (exaggerating here).  He might have told me more, but he said the stage smoke obscured his view.

He could not tell me exactly what this preacher-man said, but, he thought it was a religious motivational speech.  It had the “twenty-somethings” sort of cheering.

My friend said he left early.  Said he felt uneasy, uncomfortable and a bit sick to his stomach from what he had experienced.

I’ve been wondering why so many in the post-modern church have become what I call entertainment oriented religious consumers“?   I think, in part, it is because that is what the churches are selling.

So many in the postmodern American Church are struggling in their personal and private lives.  So many are caught in a web of addictions and sin.  So many are stressed out and on medications for relief.  “WHY has this happened?”, I wondered.

One recent morning at breakfast, my wife and I were discussing these experiences and these matters, and she casually made the comment, “They are pandering to the culture”.

“What?”, I asked.

“Those churches” she replied, “They are pandering to the culture“.

“WOW”, I thought.  “That is exactly right!  Brilliant!”

Now, just between just you and me, I was not exactly sure what the word ‘pandering’ really meant, so, I looked it up.

Here is what I found at Dictionary.com:

followed by the word Panderer.  A noun,

a person who furnishes clients for a prostitute or supplies persons for illicit sexual intercourse; procurer; pimp.

a person who caters to or profits from the weaknesses or vices of others.

a go-between in amorous intrigues.

Verb (used without object)

to act as a pander; cater basely: to pander to the vile tastes of vulgar persons.

“Oh my, That’s it!”, I thought.  Dare I say it?  Somehow these guys seem to think that when the Apostle Paul said, “I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some.”  that he meant we are to BE like them in order to win them to Christ.  But, that is just wrong on every level!

IMMATURE, UNSTABLE (AND NUTS)

Yes, try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything you can to save some. But, becoming like the world, living like the world, looking like the world, talking like the world in order to save the world is a perversion of the Apostle’s meaning as to “gaining men”.  And, it’s just immature, unstable and nuts!

Hey, Hipster:  Jesus alone, saves.  Your apparel does not save, tattoos don’t save, loud music flashing lights deliver a false emotion and being a hipster does nothing.

It isn’t the culture killing the church – it is the ‘postmodern cure’ killing them.

I guess I shouldn’t blame these hipster preachers.  They were just doing what their contemporaries are doing for the world.  You could say, in a funny way, THEY ARE PANDERING TO THE CULTURE.  But, Church is not the world!  And the traditional treatments will not work on The Church and those seeking help. They need THE CURE, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

So, here is what I have to say to some of you preachers:  GROW UP.  Become mature and stable.  Psssst.  More are leaving and staying away from the church than are coming to see you clowning around in your ‘pretties’ on stage.

YOU ARE TO BE IN THE WORLD, BUT, NOT OF THE WORLD

There is a day at hand, when people will run to and fro, looking for answers to their greatest dilemma, and that time is NOW!  Listen, friend:

WHEN JESUS IS LIFTED UP – HE WILL DRAW ALL PEOPLETO HIMSELF John 12:32

Lift Him Up!

Your Brother and Friend,

Mike Young

PS:  If you are a preacher or a pastor, and you are offended by this and reject this, then hear what John the Baptist said so succinctly, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”

CHRISTIANITY AND SOCIALISM?

cross and a fist.jpg

The Social Gospel:  The 21st Century

In the United States, the Social Gospel is still influential in mainline Protestant denominations such as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church USA, the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church; it seems to be growing in the Episcopal Church as well, especially with that church’s effort to support the ONE Campaign. In Canada, it is widely present in the United Church and in the Anglican Church. Social Gospel elements can also be found in many service and relief agencies associated with Protestant denominations and the Catholic Church in the United States.

It also remains influential among Christian socialist circles in Britain in the Church of England, Methodist and Calvinist movements.

In Catholicism, liberation theology has similarities to the Social Gospel. In the Anglican Church, the social gospel has found expression in pacifism.

Christian Socialism

Christian 'socialism'

Christian socialism generally refers to those on the Christian left whose politics are both Christian and socialist, and who see these two philosophies as being interrelated. This category can include Liberation theology

cross and a fist liberation theology.jpg  and the doctrine of the social gospel. The term “Christian Socialism” is used in this sense by organizations such as the Christian Socialist Movement (CSM), a specifically Christian grouping affiliated with the British Labour Party.

Christian socialists draw parallels between what some have characterized as the egalitarian and anti-establishment message of Jesus, who — according to the Christian Gospel — spoke against the religious authorities of his time, and the egalitarian, anti-establishment, and sometimes anti-clerical message of most contemporary socialists. Some Christian Socialists have gone as far as to become active Communists (see Christian communism).

This author’s position:  Socialism and Communism are the anathema of Christianity.  They cannot coexist.  They are incompatible.  One must survive, and the other must cease to exist.

The Christian doctrine of eschatology teaches the complete eradication of Socialism, Communism and their adherents. (Read the New Testament Book of the Revelation).

JESUS RESPONDS – continued in detail

Matthew 23:1-36

Let’s assume the year is 2020, and paraphrasing, drawn on the 23rd chapter of the Book of Mathew:

“Jesus speaks to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: “These Preachers, Priests, Rabbis, and hypocrites have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; therefore all that they tell you and do and observe, they themselves do not do themselves.

  • They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders,
  • but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.
  • But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men;
    • Some wear clothing to be noticed by others, wearing the latest fads, sporting tattoos and tight fitting garments.
    • Others dress to ‘fit into the crowds they can attract, the people who think like them and want to be satisfied with a good performance.
  • These Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in their churches, and respectful greetings the get in the market places, and being called Teacher, Preacher, Father or Rabbi by men.
    • But Jesus said do not be called Teacher, a great one, or my honorable sir
    • Do not be called Rabbi, a title used by the Jews to address their teachers; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.
    • Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.
    • Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.
    • For you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
  • Woe to you,Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites, because you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
  • Woe to you Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
  • “Woe to you, blind religious teachers, who say, ‘Whoever swears by their word is nothing; but whoever swears by signing a commitment card is obligated.’
    • You fools and blind men! Which is more important, your word or committing to give an offering by signing a letter or a card?
    • And, ‘Whoever says he will do a thing, that is nothing, but whoever swears by signing a commitment card to be saved or to make an offering, he is obligated.’
    • You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the Word of a Man that sanctifies the offering?
    • Therefore, whoever swears by the his own word, swears both by the his honor and by everything on it. And whoever swears by the Bible, swears both by the Bible and by Him who wrote it.
    • And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.
  • “Woe to you,Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites! For you have our personal and petty rules, in other words “you tithe mint and dill and cummin”, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law, such as honesty, justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
    • You blind Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
  • “Woe to you, Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites! For you act so holy, in other words, “you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish”, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.
    • You blind Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.
  • “Woe to you, Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
    • So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly
  • “Woe to you, Preachers, Priests and Rabbis, you hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in denying and ignoring the prophets, by which they were guilty as if they had murdered them.’
    • So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who by ignoring the prophets, murder them. Fill up your conscience, then, to a full measure of the guilt of your fathers.
    • You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?
    • “Therefore, behold, I have sent you prophets and wise men and true men and women of God and some of them you will kill with lies and rumors and crucify them on your evil crosses, and some of them you will attack in their Churches, and persecute them unfairly from city to city.
    • On you falls the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the spiritual temple consisting of the saints of all ages joined together by and in Christ and altar God used the whole burnt offerings which stood in the sanctuary or the Holy Place, The Cross on which Christ suffered and died. To eat of this altar which is to say “between the temple and the altar”.
