Practice Practice Practice

Practice, practice, practice.

Have you heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect”?

Many of know this is true. And, the Bible does tell us to “be perfect, even as God is perfect”, in other words that is our standard.

Unfortunately, almost as many don’t follow this adage when it comes to self improvement such as health eating, self disciples, weight loss, improved relationships, finances, etc.

But, should we practice these things? And, is that always a good thing?

The Bible has quite a bit to say about practice and self discipline.

For example, Philippians 4:6 says,

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Another example is found in 1 Thessalonians 4:9

“Now as to the love of the brethren, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;

10 for indeed you do practice it toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, to excel still more,

11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you,

12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.

And finally, in 2 Peter 2:5

“Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge,

6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness,

7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.

8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;

11 for in this waythe entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

Just in these 3 examples of practicing these self disciplines, we see the outcomes of:

1. The God of peace will be with you

2. You will not be in any need

3. You will never stumble

4. The entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you

As a cautionary note, these Biblical self disciplines are not from a “Self Improvement handbook” nor are they “methods to create a better you”.

These are God-breathed,

Spirit-empowered,

Messiah-demonstrated,

Prophetic

Living Truths

We are to practice these things daily and the Prophetic Truth of God’s Word will live in and through our lives so that neither we nor the world around us will ever be the same again.

AMEN

Come on, dear friends, let’s do this, together, and defy the logic of this world!

Your Friend and Brother,

Mike Young

Romans 12:1 ¶ Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
